What's The Story
In 18th century London, Benjamin Barker is wrongly imprisoned by a corrupt judge. Now that Barker's out, he wants revenge. Barker morphs himself into local barber Sweeney Todd, offering the closest shaves in town. How close? Let's just say it's the last shave his customers will ever need. But what to do with the bodies? Local baker Mrs. Lovett has a deliciously evil idea: bake pies containing the remains of the victims. Suddenly her business is booming, and the two develop one of the strangest working relationships in town. It's so strange, in fact, they just can't help but sing about it.
Three Good Reasons
- 1Stephen Sondheim has won seven Tony Awards, an Oscar, a Pulitzer, and, shockingly, The Stephen Sondheim Award.
- 2It's director Tim Burton's sixth collaboration with Johnny Depp, his fifth with Helena Bonham Carter (not counting their two kids), and his third with both.
- 3Sacha Baron Cohen leaves Borat behind to play wily Italian conman Signor Adolfo Pirelli.
Bet You Didn't Know
Johnny Depp grew up wanting to be a musician, not an actor. He played the guitar in the film
Chocolat, and wrote and performed the theme music for his character in
Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Sweeney Todd marks his first time singing on screen.
