What's The Story
Eight-year-old Marjane is precocious and outgoing, and dreams one day of being a prophet who saves the world. But Tehran in 1978 isn't the best place for a girl like Marjane, as the new Islamic Republic takes control after the fall of the Shah's regime. The new government clamps down with laws and brutality, forcing Marjane to wear a veil and quiet her outspoken nature. As Tehran is attacked during war with Iraq, the repression Marjane faces worsens, and thousands of Iranians are imprisoned. Finally, fearing for her safety, Marjane's parents send her away to Austria. Years later, Marjane chooses to return to Iran, but will her free spirit allow her to stay?
Three Good Reasons
- 1It won the Jury Prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival - quite an achievement for any filmmakers' first feature, let alone an animated one.
- 2The story is based on Marjane Satrapi's own life, and is adapted from the graphic novels she wrote and illustrated.
- 3Because whether you're Iranian, French, or American, singing "Eye of the Tiger" will always work to pump you up.
Bet You Didn't Know
Persepolis was the capital of the ancient Persian Empire. It was founded around 560 B.C. during the reign of Cyrus the Great. The grand palaces of the city were completed by King Xerxes, who, despite what some movies might tell you, was not seven feet tall nor did he wear a gold Speedo.
