What's The Story
Barkley Michaelson has spent his entire life failing to live up to the expectations of his father Eli, an insufferable womanizer who has just been awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. When Barkley is kidnapped the next day, the secrets that suddenly surface don't look good under Eli's new spotlight. Eli refuses to fork over his Nobel loot to pay the kidnapper's ransom, and so Barkley's mother has no choice but to let herself be drawn into a bizarre and dangerous game of high-stakes revenge.
Three Good Reasons
- 1Alan Rickman is in fine form as the egomaniacal professor audiences will love to hate, and he rounds out a stellar ensemble cast including Bill Pullman, Eliza Dushku, and Danny DeVito.
- 2The pulsing techno soundtrack, featuring artists like Crystal Method and the Chemical Brothers, is a perfect complement to the whiplash-inducing twists and turns of the plot.
- 3Because you've always wanted to see a Mini Cooper misbehave badly in a mall.
Bet You Didn't Know
Even real-life Nobel Laureates aren't always the best role models. The 1976 winner in Medicine served 19 months in jail for child molestation, the 1956 Physics winner supported the eugenics movement, and even Marie Curie had a fling with a married man.
