What's The Story

The story is, according to the UN, "the world's greatest humanitarian and human rights catastrophe." Here it's documented from the POV of six people. There's 24-year-old UCLA student Adam Sterling, a political neophyte who works to keep California's state funds out of Sudan. There's Ahmed Mohammed Abakar, who fled his home and now lives in a camp with 47,000 other refugees. There's Luis Moreno-Ocampo, a prosecutor for the International Criminal Court in The Hague. There's actor Don Cheadle, whose role in Hotel Rwanda inspired him to use his celebrity to raise awareness. There's Pablo Recalde, leader of the World Food Program team in West Darfur, who risks his life every day to save others. And there's Hejewa Adam, a mother whose Darfur village was destroyed, so she joins the rebels to fight for peace. These people tell the story of the genocide that continues with each passing frame of film.

Three Good Reasons

  • 1This is a real-life picture of the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century -- and it's still going on. How's that for important?
  • 2Director Ted Braun and his crew were the only members of Western media allowed in Darfur, and they filmed people who had never been filmed before.
  • 3Graeme Revell's score and the film's signature song, "Love's In Need of Love Today," performed by Bono and Stevie Wonder, feature musicians from Darfur.

Bet You Didn't Know

According to Forbes magazine, Executive Producer Jeff Skoll ranks #204 on the list of the world's wealthiest people. His $4.2 billion net worth comes mostly courtesy of eBay, where he served as its first president and full-time employee. More about Darfur Now on Yahoo! Movies
