Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - Photo: Jim Spellman, WireImage.com Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are about the most visible and most successful romantically-linked movie stars since Bogie and Bacall. And, yes, we know they are the doting parents of six children and tireless humanitarians. But when you get down to it, which of the two of them has the stronger film career? I crunched the numbers to find out.

Angelina started early, first appearing at age 7 in "Lookin' to Get Out" with her father Jon Voight. Her professional career started small with supporting roles in films like "Hackers," "Foxfire" and "Playing God." She first broke out as a leading actress on TV, winning Golden Globes for her work in "George Wallace" and "Gia." Her first box office success was police thriller "The Bone Collector" with Denzel Washington, which earned $66.5 million in the US. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 1999's "Girl, Interrupted." This was followed by the back-to-back hits "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." Some of her biggest box office takes have been with the animated movies "Shark Tale" ($160.8 mil) and "Kung Fu Panda" ($215.4 mil). Angelina's next film is "Changeling," the true story of a mother in the 1920s whose son was abducted, directed by Clint Eastwood.

Brad Pitt spent the first few years of his professional career doing bit parts in low-budget films and TV shows. His breakout role was as an alluring drifter in "Thelma & Louise" in 1991. In '94 he had hits with "Legends of the Fall" and "Interview With the Vampire." The next year he received critical acclaim for "Seven" and "12 Monkeys." Throughout the rest of the decade his films performed solidly but not spectacularly in the $30-60 million range. It was 2001's "Ocean's Eleven" that brought Brad his first $150 million-plus blockbuster, and the two subsequent sequels both broke $100 million domestically. His only attempt at an animated movie was the massive bomb "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas." Brad will be seen this winter as a man who ages backwards in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons," costarring Cate Blanchett.

The Verdict

Both stars' careers are evenly matched in terms of financial success and critical acclaim. In fact, the highest grossing live-action film for each of them is the one they made together: "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Both have generated Oscar buzz for their upcoming films. However, while Angelina has many projects in development, she is not currently at work on a film, nor is she committed to start on one in the near future. She in a recent interview she said, "The kids are my priority, so it's possible that from now on I will make fewer movies." Meanwhile, Brad has finished filming "The Tree of Life" with reclusive director Terrence Malick, and has just started work on Quentin Tarantino's "Inglorious Bastards." He also has several projects as a producer, including the recently wrapped "The Time Traveler's Wife." So, with his future prospects more certain, I'm declaring:

Winner: BRAD PITT
