Johnny Depp stars in a tale of comedy, intrigue and booze, adapted from the book by Hunter S. Thompson. Tiring of the madness of 1950s New York, journalist Paul Kemp re-locates to Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper. Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with the wildly attractive fiancée of Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deal. But when Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen's financial benefit, or use them to take him down.

When Curtis begins having terrifying dreams about an encroaching, apocalyptic storm, he refrains from telling his wife, Samantha. To protect her and their daughter Hannah, he starts channeling his anxiety and money into the obsessive building of a backyard storm shelter. His seemingly inexplicable behavior concerns and confounds his Samantha, and provokes intolerance among co-workers, friends and neighbors. But the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within the community doesn't compare to Curtis' private fear of what his dreams may truly signify.
