Viggo Mortensen Reacts to Golden Globe Nomination

Viggo Mortensen in "A Dangerous Method." Sony Pictures ClassicsShortly after the Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning, Best Supporting Actor nominee Viggo Mortensen talked exclusively to Yahoo! Movies from Madrid where he's performing on stage. The actor, who played Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method" opposite Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley shared he reaction to the good news: "I just heard a little while ago from a friend of mine. It's a welcome surprise because the movie's only in a few theaters. And it hasn't gotten any attention at all this fall in that regard."

As for his co-star Keira Knightley, Mortensen was equally surprised she wasn't recognized with a nomination. "With ten nominees — comedy and drama— I thought for sure she'd get in there."

"And [director] David [Cronenberg] as well. He's almost always overlooked in America, though not in his native Canada. He's recognized as a talented director that makes movies, and then he disappears. I do think that much like David -- he'll go down in history as one of our best directors -- I also think that Keira's performance has aroused difference of opinion, but it's truly an original performance," he continued. "What she did is comparable to what a young Meryl Streep would have done. She keeps doing good work and challenging herself. It would be nice to attend the ceremony with David and Keira, but I'll be proud to represent our movie."
