Paramount Really Wants You to Remember That They’re Serious About ‘Top Gun 2′

Almost exactly 12 months ago, Paramount let the world know that, yes, they're serious about doing a "Top Gun" sequel. (So serious, in fact, that people involved with it actually bothered contacting blogs to inform them that Tom Cruise's Maverick will definitely be a major character in the film.) Even original director Tony Scott sounded excited about making a second installment. But you have a busy life. You moved on to other things. Paramount has no problem with that, but, seriously, they want you to know that they're gonna make this movie. They even have some writers for it!

Variety reports that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, a writing team who worked on "X-Men: First Class" and "Thor" (and a few "Fringe" episodes), will be writing the script, although there are no details about the plot at all. Probably something to do with fighter jets.

"But, Mr. Projector," you're saying, "I thought Christopher McQuarrie was going to write the movie." It sure seemed like that a year ago, but now new writers are on board. We'd love if the sequel turns out to be a dark cautionary tale where Maverick and all of his flyboy friends realize that their jingoistic '80s excess was merely an empty shell to hide the deep insecurity and self-doubt that was eating away at their soul. That probably won't happen, though. More likely, it'll be two hours of this...

... just with a lot more CG. And in 3D.
