"The Cabin In The Woods" is one of those movies that appears to be made for film students raised on Steven Spielberg and Wes Craven who are also regular attendees of Comic-Con. It's an in-joke horror film from Joss Whedon and "Cloverfield" co-writer Drew Goddard (who directed it) about a group of horny teens who are terrorized in the woods ... but with the post-modern twists and self-referential thrills that you'd expect from a Whedon project. How's the best way we can describe this? The poster for the film says, "If You Hear A Strange Sound Outside ... Have Sex."

The film would seem a surefire sleeper hit, not just because of Whedon, but also because of a stellar cast, including "Thor"'s Chris Hemsworth (whom Whedon is directing in "The Avengers"), Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. But it has now been sitting on the shelf for almost two years. Lionsgate will finally be releasing it, likely this October.

What's been taking so long? Well, "The Cabin In The Woods" had the misfortune of being an MGM studio, and therefore was left in limbo when the company went bankrupt and tried to restructure all its assets. The film was one of the two MGM had lying around -- at least the films other studios wanted to buy -- so Lionsgate snatched it up. The other MGM film looking for a distributor? None other than "Red Dawn," also starring Hemsworth. If "Thor" is as big a hit as many believe it will be, it'll be nice having two high-profile movies, filmed before "Thor," sitting in the hopper, waiting to profit. Thanks for going broke, MGM!
