Daniel Day-Lewis Has a Great Honest Abe Beard Going for ‘Lincoln’

It was just over a year ago that it was announced that Daniel Day-Lewis would be the star of Steven Spielberg's Abraham Lincoln film. There's no question that the two-time Oscar-winner is an astonishingly gifted actor, but when you're playing a revered American president there will always be questions about whether you can do justice to a mythic figure in U.S. history -- especially when some people refuse to accept Day-Lewis in the role since he's English. But we think most folks will be willing to look past such minor issues after checking out this first photo of Day-Lewis sporting his beard for "Lincoln." You have to admit, the resemblance is pretty striking -- and rather presidential.

The photo (the first we've seen of the actor as Lincoln) was snapped by Michael Phillips (via Badass Digest), who took the picture presumably while Day-Lewis was enjoying a lunch break during the filming of "Lincoln" in Virginia. While a lot of unofficial on-set photos capture stars at their most unflattering, this casual shot actually gives Day-Lewis a regal, dignified air that's synonymous with most people's impressions of our 16th president. Even in repose, the guy just exudes rugged authenticity.

"Lincoln," which is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals," is said to follow Lincoln during the final months of his life when the Civil War was coming to a close. The film won't open until December 2012, but it already has to be considered an Oscar front-runner simply because of the pedigree of the material, the director and the star -- and that it's not even mentioning the rest of the cast, which includes Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Stuhlbarg, David Strathairn and Hal Holbrook. Spielberg has two movies coming next month -- "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse" -- but after seeing this Day-Lewis photo it's hard not to focus on what the director has coming our way next year. We always knew Day-Lewis could play the part. Today, we learned he definitely looks the part, too.

In the world of acting Daniel Day-Lewis is a surgeon. Hollywood is filled with actors who couldn't put a bandaid on correctly. Mr. Day-Lewis stands out above all others because he isn't in his profession because he wants the fame or the glory or the money...he could have had much more of all of those things many years ago...He is in his profession because he loves the art of acting. Every profession has a rare individual who upholds the very highest standards....Daniel Day-Lewis is the standard bearer for his craft...all others are simply working in his shadow.

Do you work in Day-Lewis's PR department? :-)

If you mean like a paid employee no. I am a car dealer and he buys his cars from me so I have to do what it takes to keep the customers coming back. ;0)

The comparison to a doctor probably isn't the best comparison. Most doctors are in it for the glory, money and "my son is a doctor" fame. Don't get me wrong, some doctors actually care about their work, but most are all too happy to tell you "theres nothing wrong, take a Motrin", bill you for the exam and have you find out a year later that you have cancer that is now untreatable.

Mr. Day-Lewis is actually half Irish, as well as being born to a Jewish mother. Something for malcontents to complain about, I suppose, but...forget the labels. He's just one of the greatest actors in the world. I look forward to seeing him in this role.

Call me crazy, but I thought he was Irish, not English. Could be wrong though.

All I know is he is a great actor and each role he takes on he nails. I can't think of a movie he did that I didn't like.

I saw "My Left Foot" and was gobsmacked when a strapping, healthy, handsome man strutted across the state to accept the Oscar Award. I thought for sure the part was played by a challenged person. Don't laugh...this was before anyone knew who he was. English or not, Abe is in good hands.

"...especially when some people refuse to accept Day-Lewis in the role since he's English"

Who are these pathetic losers? Uhhhh I'm pretty sure that war ended over 200 years ago. I guess they're not allowed to like The Beatles, The Stones, fish & chips or Bass Ale, either.

“I have two great enemies, the southern army in front of me and the financial institutions, in the rear. Of the two, the one in the rear is the greatest enemy….. I see in the future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of the war.”

That is just crazy, doppleganger-esque! And the cast sounds phenomenal, I haven't paid much attention to news about this project but now I'm pretty psyched!

Daniel Day Lewis is in my view the greatest actor ever. He becomes his subject.

He is my favorite. Nailed it in There Will be Blood.

I pray this movie does justice to one of the two greatest Americans ever born - the other of course, being George Washington. Hopefully it will help shine the light of truth upon a generation whose ignorance is matched only by their arrogance. Frivolous children who know only the greatest of prosperity, security and comfort, they are gulls for any silly changing wind that promises them more of the same if only some foolish impossible scheme were followed. They need the understanding that comes only from looking at the hard reality and struggles of the past, even before there was a Martin Luther King, a Civil Rights movement or a United States; a time when heroic giants strode the continent of North America, shaping momentous events all the time - when the world as we now know it was just in the first act of creation.

I found him to be mesmerizing in 'Gangs of New York.' While the rest of the cast were somewhat lacking, he carried the film. I am so looking forward to this upcoming film, and think that he will 'do right' by Lincoln by presenting him in an authentic and thoughtful way. Good stuff!
