Aaron Eckhart Will Play Frankenstein … But Maybe Not the Frankenstein You’re Thinking Of

Early this summer, it seemed like everybody and their grandmother were working on a Frankenstein project, but after "Real Steel" director Shawn Levy signed up for a big Frankenstein film with Fox, that seemingly put the kibosh on a lot of those other ones. Well, not all of them, because Aaron Eckhart will be starring in "I, Frankenstein," Lionsgate's stab at the monster's story. There's a twist, though. (There always is, isn't there?)

Lionsgate sent out a press release saying that Stuart Beattie, who's worked on the screenplays for "30 Days of Night" and the first "Pirates of the Caribbean," will write and direct the film. But this "Frankenstein" will be a modern-day parable based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux:

Frankenstein's creature, ADAM [played by Eckhart], has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. As writer/director, Stuart Beattie said, "Mary Shelly's story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human."

Well, OK, then.

There's not a lot known about Levy's Frankenstein film, but suddenly it falls behind Lionsgate's because it doesn't have a star or a release date. ("I, Frankenstein" is set for February 22, 2013.) Those things might start quickly falling into place now that "I, Frankenstein" has thrown down the gauntlet. To review, we now have competing Frankenstein movies and competing Snow White films. As for Eckhart, he sure seems serious about this action-movie thing, huh? Of course, we liked "Battle: Los Angeles." We know we're alone in that opinion.
