    Michelle Williams’s Unusual Accessory

Michelle Williams hit the Independent Spirit Awards armed with a quirky accessory this afternoon. Michelle carried an Olympia Le-Tan clutch, a book-shaped purse donning the cover art of J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." Williams has previously carried clutches by Le-Tan to other events, picking one that paid tribute to Arthur Miller's "The Misfits" for this year's BAFTAs. The nod to "The Misfits" was a subtle allusion to her "My Week with Marilyn" character, who is married to the author in the film.

The reasons for choosing Salinger's novel are not quite as obvious, but the bag complemented the actress's unusual attire at today's awards. Going along with the literary vibe, Williams wore a chic Louis Vuitton sport suit, which looked to be schoolboy-inspired. Perhaps not inspired by the classroom, however, were the peep-toe heels that finished off the ensemble. When asked what made her choose her look, Michelle wasn't quite sure herself. "You see something and like it, and it is hard to explain why until time passes."

When the interviewer said "how fitting" about Michelle's Catcher in the Rye purse...what exactly did she MEAN by that? Did she just throw that out there for no reason? Did she even realize what she was saying? If she knew anything at all about Catcher in the Rye she should have said, "how ironic". After all, Holden Caulfield held Hollywood in contempt and thought actors were "phonies".

Those Olympia Le-Tan clutches are rip offs of another designer. Signature M started making actual books into clutches back in 2003..

Interesting choice. Maybe because J.D. was himself an independant spirit. And congrats Michelle on your award. I believe well deserved. I hope you surprise all those at the Oscars. Here is one fan rooting for you..

I wonder if she's really read the book? In college we used to carry certain books to convey a certain "image" but we at least carried an actual book!
