Daniel Radcliffe: Harry Potter Deserved More Oscar Nominations

Despite being the highest-grossing film franchise of all-time, Harry Potter has never received much love from the academy.

The eighth and final film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, scored only three nominations in the technical categories at the 84th Annual Academy Awards -- something Daniel Radcliffe isn't too happy about.

"I don't think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids' films, unless they're directed by Martin Scorsese," Radcliffe, 22, tells Radio Times (as excerpted by The Guardian). "I was watching Hugo the other day and going, 'Why is this nominated and we're not?' I was slightly miffed."

Says Radcliffe: "There's a certain amount of snobbery. It's kind of disheartening. I never thought I'd care. But it would've been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in."

Six of the eight Harry Potter films have been nominated for Academy Awards, though only in the Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Best Cinematography categories. None of the movies have ever won.

Absolutely yes! Movies are supposed to be all about entertainment, and as the biggest movie franchise ever it certainly deserves some respect.....or do the Oscar judges think that the public are completely wrong by enjoying these movies more than any others?

You do know its the entire Academy who decides who wins right?
      • Mary 3 months ago
They don't care what the public likes. The snobbery is there. And Sergio we do know who decides who wins. Some of us might even know more than you do.

Oscars are not prizes for being popular, they are prizes for great art, which the Harry Potter movies were not.

Yeah it is upsetting. It really is, but they only nominate films that are seen as "serious". These films will go down in history and if they don't recognize it then the fans will. We know the worth of these films and all those who worked on them. 10 years of great cinema. 10 years! Enough said.

        And "Bridesmaids" is serious?!

        One word...Bridesmaids.

Sometimes I am surprised by the movie choices and nominations for Oscars too. Luckily, we have the People's Choice awards also. I loved all the Harry Potter movies, especially the first ones.

The Academy never honors popular movies because the masses love them. The only movies the Academy likes are the artsy-fartsy independent films and Scorsese films. So if the movie is a huge commercial hit it is a good chance the Academy will snub it. On the other hand, if no one has ever heard of the film, then it will win all kinds of Oscars. That's what happens when you have high and mighty film majors doing all the voting.

Could not agree with you more, and could not have said it better myself.

Wish I could agree with you there, but then I remember Titanic. I think that if a movie grosses a lot, then it has to end up sucking, like that one did

American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? More like American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Hipsters.

I grew up with Harry Potter and I'm rather disappointed they didn't get nominated. every actor did their character right, they looked the part and it gave you the feeling that the Wizarding world is real
it really is a bummer that the Academy is biased against fantasy and sci-fi when in reality those are really the best films to watch than two characters debating about their love life or whatever drama is popular these days.
and really; Daniel, Emma, and Rupert spent ten years on eight films, along with Alan Rickma, Tom Felton, and Maggie and many others.

OF COURSE IT DOES. Harry potter is now a childhood series. I always anticipated the next movie. Its an iconic movie!

It started out childish when i was a child, now its toward the same audience a few years later.

The men and women of Harry Potter DEFINITELY deserved more recognition. I'm totally with Radcliffe here.

i think they should have won. thier a good bunch of talented kids, who gave up thier childhoods to entertain US! that should be recognised!

All the actors in Harry Potter are great.

I think the late, great, Richard Harris definitely should have been nominated for his terrific performance as Dumbledore in the first two films. Gambon was good, but Harris was brilliant.

He's right. But the academy isn't always a good measuring stick. Star Wars was largely snubbed. So was a little musical called Singing in the Rain and several others that lost to much less memorable movies. If nothing else, the makeup/special effects and Alan Rickman should've gotten a nod. It's fine though. Hogwarts will always be there to welcome us home.

Total snobbery, Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes both deserve awards.
    • Elaine  •  3 months ago
They should have really gotten awards for these movies. I mean, the whole settings of these movies were awesome, and a lot of time had to be put in them. If they would have showed nudity or sex scenes, it would have won an award. I think the Oscars are a joke!

Eric-there are black people in the harry potter movies....actually two very important supporting characters are black
    • AmberL  •  Houston, Texas  •  3 months ago
Agree with Daniel. 8 years of the kids' lives should be recognized, especially since they brought in so much money for the industry.
    • Sam Sweet  •  Menasha, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
There's no question about it: Harry Potter has been, and always will be, the best movie series. The Oscars are biased, honestly. Alan Rickman deserves an Oscar more than Jonah Hill ever will!

i think its all rigged. The Harry Potter movies should have been nominated for a lot more..and they definately should have won everything!
    • Barbara  •  3 months ago
Absolutely, these films are snubbed by the Academy. The cast is outstanding--all of them--but especially the main characters: Radcliffe, Grint, Watson, Rickman, Maggie Smith, etc....Gary Oldman...the list is endless and this cast has grown in both talent and teamwork over the years. Danielle is absolutely right--while Hugo was a wonderful film, it is no more fantastic than the Potter series. Especial note should have gone to the first film, which was absolutely brilliant, and the 3rd, 6th and final two part 7s. It is snobbery and an inability to acknowledge those who don't play the Hollywood games. Otherwise, Johnny Depp would have at least 6 Oscars by now, yet Streep, Clooney, et al,. continue to rake them in.
