Couple’s Big Risk for Oscar Film

We all have our picks for best picture, best actor and actress, best screenplay, and best documentary. But there should be no argument about best real life story at the Oscars this weekend.

That goes to a young couple that had to decide between their dream apartment and their Hollywood dream. Fortunately for them and for us, they chose the latter.

The characters in this love story are Andrew Bowler and Gigi Causey, who were married three years ago and debated over whether to use their savings for a place in the big city or something else.

[ Photos: Infamous Oscar fashions ]

New York City beckoned, but Causey wasn't sold.

"I kind of said, 'This isn't going to work,'" she told CBS. "'If we buy an apartment, this is what we're doing for the rest of our lives, for the next decade,' and so I said, 'Why don't we make a movie instead?'

    "So we did."

That movie is "Time Freak," about a time machine that causes unintended havoc for its off-beat inventor. The couple spent $25,000 -- pretty much all they had -- to make it.

And it didn't get good reviews.

[ Watch Live Saturday: Independent Spirit Awards red carpet ]

Bowler and Causey got rejections aplenty from several festivals, and suddenly the film about the time machine took on an ironic meaning: Would the pair spend the "rest of their lives" trying to go back and undo a mistake?

But just like in any good Hollywood script, a big surprise was coming.

Causey submitted "Time Freak" to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Nothing more to lose, right?

The couple recorded their response on Oscar nomination morning. If "Time Freak" is as riveting and rewarding as their reaction, it should definitely win an Oscar.
And even if not, Bowler and Causey already have their Hollywood ending.

one of my favorite motto's in life "YOU NEVER KNOW UNLESS YOU TRY" and thats a.what they did they took the biggest chance they probably would ever face.......... well besides weather or not to have kids lol............seriously that could have gone really bad but by the grace of god it turned up and i for one think their choice is very inspireing anyone else?

America freakin Rocks! Let's all be like these people, dive in and take a chance. Sure most will fail, still it is much better to fail than to not try at all.

Easy to say when you don't have a wife and kids to support.

As adults, we can be far more understanding when things don't go as planned. Young children really don't get the concept. I agree with Jonathan, if I didn't have a family, my husband and I would be far more willing, to try new and exciting things. Having kids really can alter ones idea of doing so. Neither of your comment are wrong though! America IS great, but some things are easier when you don't have wee ones to worry about.

Yes, but even still...children need to see parents who are inspired and driven to pursue dreams, to take risks...to do something that pushes their comfort zone. Children would learn so much in the process....perseverance! As a high school art teacher, I cannot stress this enough.

They should win just because this is a refreshing change for something good. So sick of all the new normal crap.

So happy for them. I do think it's weird that they took the time to set up a camera and record their reaction. Not saying it's fake, but it is an unusual idea.

Now I have to see. That was a great response. I have felt like that only a few times in my life so it was wonderful to see their reaction. I hope their dreams come true.
