Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner on ‘The Bodyguard’ Bond

Photo by Getty ImagesWhitney Houston's co-star from "The Bodyguard," Kevin Costner, will speak at her funeral this weekend. And that speaks to the special bond the two developed over their blockbuster movie.

The 1992 movie was a hit, and the song "I Will Always Love You," became Houston's signature anthem. The film starred Houston as a megastar threatened by a stalker, with Costner playing a Secret Service agent sent to protect her. The movie struck a note with fans, grossing $400 million worldwide. And the movie soundtrack is the most successful of all time.

A few years back, Costner told "Good Morning America" how the singer came to the role. He recounted that when he saw Houston before the movie, he thought, "She just really has it." He added it was no mystery to him how she ended up in "The Bodyguard." The actor explained, "She was such a true beauty and such a musical instrument. And I really wanted her (for the part)." So much so, he was willing to postpone the movie. He said, "There was a moment in time where it could have maybe been someone else, and I said 'I want to wait for Whitney.' Ultimately, Warner Brothers agreed to wait a year for her. "

Costner also told the backstory of how "I Will Always Love You" came to be the song in the movie. He had planned for it to be "What Becomes of a Broken Heart." But during the year wait, that song was in another movie. Costner liked the Dolly Parton song, and eventually, despite some concerns about "this little country song," Houston sang it a capella. Safe to say that the song was a good decision.

The producers also wondered how an audience would react to a mixed-race relationship. Costner felt strongly this should not be an issue. He said, "This is not race. This was about good, old-fashioned chemistry. … I kissed her once for everybody in America, and I kissed her once for myself." All together now, "awwww."

In a 1993 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Houston confessed she didn't think she was ready for acting, but Costner changed her mind. She said, "He made me feel so comfortable. … He was like whatever you need we will supply for you." One thing he told her not to do: take acting lessons. He told the singer, "We want you and what you bring to the character." Houston added, "I felt more insecure about the pressure to do this film."

It's clear, Costner's instincts were right on this one. The two were pitch-perfect.

Kevin Costner is an honorable man to speak for her. It is wonderful how he still cares for her and will stand up to speak beautiful things about her. With the media trashing her at every turn, I am glad that there are still people that can talk highly of her. She wasn't perfect and had problems, just the same as anyone else, but the people that knew and loved her already knew all the bad things and still loved her unconditionally anyway. I pray that Whitney finds the peace she couldn't find here and that they can lay her to rest and the media will stop hurting the people who loved her more than they already are.

No one is perfect and your right when you love
someone you love them despite the bad because that's what
real love is made of. The media is very wrong for bashing her.

Whitney and Costner were like magic together, they blended so well. That movie was so real until you almost forgot that it was fiction, it was incredible. R.I.P. dear and thank you so very much for the memories you have given us. You will truly, truly be missed.

I always thought as Costner a a hottie who grew into a mature and even more handsome man. But what makes a good looking person even better looking is when you find out what good strong character they are made of. Twenty years ago movie and he still has fond memories and kind words for a co-star. A good friend indeed.

You are 100% correct. The chemistry between the two was amazing. He was a wonderful friend to her and had great instincts about the song being part of the movie.

Isn't it sad that we don't have more Kevin Costners in Hollywood and the enterment world in general. He really is a stand up guy.

"This is not race. This was about good, old-fashioned chemistry. … I kissed her once for everybody in America, and I kissed her once for myself." Yes but if you notice in the movie they actually kissed three times I think. So who was the third kiss for Kevin? Kevin and Whitney I think.

The Bodyguard is how I will always remember Whitney Houston. The scene when she is sitting outside in the snow singing "Jesus Loves Me" with her "sister" was chilling. A beautiful soul with a beautiful voice, that is how I will remember her. And yes, Kevin Costner does get hotter with age.

I loved Kevin's tribute to Whitney.... it was so beautiful, heartfelt and well said. she will forever be missed. I loved the movie they did together (Bodyguard). I actually think they have great chemistry on set. Who knows, maybe they had secret feelings for each other

Kevin would have made a great partner for her.He has so much class something Brown lacks.I know if Kevin had been with her he would have taken very good care of her. Those drugs would have never happened.

It is hard to imagine the Body Guard being successful without these two people as the main characters.
