Weekend Picks: ‘This Means War’ & ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’

Photo: 20th Century Fox/Columbia PicturesLast weekend, four films scored big on the way to some record-breaking box-office numbers, with "The Vow" taking the wedding cake. It was the first nonholiday weekend in history that four flicks individually made more than $20 million upon debut. Since there are only two films opening wide this weekend, the chance of repeating that feat is not good.

What is good, though, is the broad audience the two films opening this weekend will likely please. One film alone spans three different genres, and the other is a sequel to a film that grossed more than $115 million. But with two such crowd-pleasers vying for your ticket sales, how can you possibly decide? Worry not; we boil down the choices below and predict what kind of fans will enjoy each flick.

Sony PicturesGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some disturbing images, and language.

    What's the Story?

Cursed to be the devil's bounty hunter, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) hides out in Eastern Europe, trying to keep the world safe from his hellfire affliction. Members of a secret sect of the Church seek out Johnny to help them save a young boy from the devil, who wants to use the boy to take on a new human form. Though Johnny is initially reluctant to embrace his powers and pit himself against the Prince of Darkness, he realizes that if he can save the boy, he may just be able to rid himself of the curse.

    Who Will Dig It?

If you love dark comic books, special effects, sequels, heart-pounding action, and incredible stunts, then check out this fiery flick, and you'll be a lucky devil.

    20th Century FoxThis Means War

Rated PG-13 for sexual content, including references; some violence and action; and language.
    What's the Story?
Legendary lothario FDR (Chris Pine) and romantically hapless Tuck (Tom Hardy) are superspy partners and best friends until, unbeknown to each another, they fall for the same beautiful woman, Lauren Scott (Reese Witherspoon). Instead of just fighting over her, they go to war over her. Using their incomparable covert skills and Sharper-Image-on-crack gadgetry, the former friends go Spy versus Spy to see who can outmatch the other and win the girl.

    Who Will Dig It?
If you like romantic comedies, spy thrillers, action/adventure films, and beautiful people, then you shouldn't fight your desire to see what happens when James Bond gets domestic.

Does anybody remember when they thought Nicolas Cage was a good actor?

Well, someone must think he's good or else he'd be making straight to dvd movies. And I happened to be one of them that likes the guy. :)

        8mm excellent flick...

He is a good actor. The problem is at some point (The Rock) he decided to sell out and become an action hero. So now he just walks through these things.

What a terrible article. So your picks for good movies to see this weekend are two big-budget movies? Thanks, but the 200 commercials an hour that I see for these movies were more than enough. How can you be a writer when you don't have an opinion you didn't get from watching commercials?

Recommending the Ghost Rider sequel to anyone should be enough to get you fired from writing about movies.

I cannot believe that "The Secret World of Arriety" is not on here. Im pretty sure it will be better than these two!!!

I watched Ghostrider last night. If you want a flick with a lame story that the answer is giving to you in the opening scene then it is for you. If you want uninspired acting from the entire cast, then this is for you. If you want lame dialogue that makes no sense, again for you. Worst than the first and that aint saying much. Worst film of the year , and I am talking from 1 year ago..... not 2012. Horrible.

So the movies to see this weekend, are the only two new movies coming out??
      • Olivia S 2 months ago
they're the only mainstream movies being released. They're completely ignoring the releases that are probably much better.

Steve I'm with you here man, this was a shameless advertorial on Yahoo's part I swear the longer I'm with Yahoo the more they get on my nerves.

Ever since I saw 'Raising Arizona', I cannot picture Cage in a serious role. I keep waiting for him to say something in that east Texas twang.

His perpetually bewildered expression doesn't help much either.

Movies have completely gone downhill when the Ghostrider sequel is the film to see.

"If you love dark comic books, special effects, sequels, heart-pounding action, and incredible stunts, then check out this fiery flick, and you'll be a lucky devil."

You notice it doesn't say anything here about a compelling story, characters you'll like, or original ideas. Just another forgettable movie they'll label a "blockbuster" only because that's what movies with special effects are called now. Who keeps falling for these lame movies?

The always amazing Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett are starring in The Secret World of Arrietty. Studio Ghibli movies are always great. Spirited Away even won an Oscar.....can you say that out this other trash youre peddling?

and just because Yahoo News spewed it out I will wait for DVD.

I didn't know people could actually afford to go to the movies anymore. DVD rentals are a lot cheaper and I don't have to listen to slobs munching on popcorn.

What about the only movie worth seeing this weekend: The Secret World of Arrietty? Useless bought Yahoo reporters.

This is advertising masquerading as journalism.

This two movies looked so absolutely horrible that I just clicked on the story to read the hilarious comments.
    • Alan  •  Austin, Texas  •  2 months ago
Listen - Yahoo, it'll be a cold day in Hell when I need to consult you for "what to watch this weekend". You're pretty ballsy to think people regard you as some sort of authority to guide their decision-making process.
    • Cobra  •  2 months ago
Nicholas Cage why do you keep making crappy movies? you used to be a great movies.
    • e  •  Fresno, California  •  2 months ago
So a lame sequel or 2 prettyboys fighting over a woman that is not very attractive.Who would pay 40 bucks to see this rehashed trash?
    • bill  •  2 months ago
Pick up a book Read it to your kids. They will never forget the day.
    • DrunkenDonuts®  •  2 months ago
Um......wasn't the first Ghost Rider panned as one of the worst movies of all time? How they created a second one is absolutely beyond me. They could make a dog licking itself into a 1.5 hour movie and the people would love it.
