Weekend Picks: ‘Big Miracle,’ ‘Chronicle,’ & ‘The Woman in Black’

Photo by Universal Pictures/20th Century Fox/CBS Films

Last weekend, "The Grey" pulled away from the rest of the pack to claim the top spot at the box office. But Liam Neeson will have to flex even more muscles if he wants to survive against this weekend's contenders.

Three major releases are going wide this weekend, and in some way, shape, or form all three involve the supernatural, though in decidedly different ways. There's a ghost story, a movie about telekinetic super powers, and a movie that uses the word "miracle" in the title! With so many super selections, we boil down the choices below along with what kind of fans will enjoy each flick. Whatever you decide, here's hoping you have an out-of-this world experience.

    UniversalBig Miracle
    Rated PG for language.

    What's the Story?
During the height of the cold war, near a chilly Alaskan town, three Grey whales are trapped under thickening Arctic ice. After local newsman Adam Carlson (John Krasinski) reports on the dire situation, a cavalcade of unlikely allies comes north to help. The whales may just stand a chance if Adam and his environmentalist ex-girlfriend (Drew Barrymore), the Inuits and the oil companies, and the Russians and the Americans can put aside their differences to clear some serious ice.

    Who Will Dig It?

If you like moving, inspirational, true stories that show we're more similar than dissimilar, then you should have a whale of time watching this feel-good fin-flick.

    20th Century FoxChronicle

Rated PG-13 for intense action and violence, thematic material, some language, sexual content, and teen drinking.

    What's the Story?
After making an amazing discovery, three high school friends realize they have acquired super telekinetic powers. As the friends learn more and more about their extraordinary abilities, what starts out as good, clean prankster fun soon turns into an egregious abuse of power that tests not only their friendship, but also their morality.

    Who Will Dig It?

Folks who like found-footage/documentary-style thrillers, superhero action flicks, morality tales, and teenage dramas should think very hard about seeing this film.

    CBS FilmsThe Woman in Black

Rated PG-13 for violence, sexual references and language, some drug material, and partial nudity.

    What's the Story?

In this classic ghost story -- replete with a haunted house, mysterious writing scrawled on a wall, and creepy nursery rhymes -- Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is a recently widowed lawyer and a single father whose grief has made a mess of his career. Arthur is summoned to a remote village in order to handle the funeral arrangements of an eccentric recluse. Arthur soon realizes his client's house is haunted by a revenge-seeking female ghost.
    Who Will Dig It?
If you like supernatural thrillers, ghost stories, character driven horror flicks, and films that get your heart racing then hop on your Quidditch stick and check it out.

I've heard good things about 'Chronicle' so I'll probably check it out. 'The Woman in Black' is actually pretty good. I saw an advanced screening last night and it was genuinely creepy. Good acting, good writing.

Thanks for the good review on the Woman in Black. I wanted to see it, but was afraid it would be cheesy.

"Quidditch stick"? There's no such thing as a "quidditch stick." If you're going to insist on keeping Daniel Radcliffe from moving past "Potter" at least get the refference right. Quidditch is played on a broom any idiot knows that. What happened to reporters checking their facts?

"Reporters checking their facts?" What does THAT mean?

I will take my family to see the movie Big Miracle since it is a family movie based on a true story. It seems that most released movies lack originality. There is a book i have read recently that i believe would make a fantastic movie. It is called Aftermath by author michael e glover. This book is an excellent read. It is available on line at amazon and B&N in both paperback and ebook. You will not be disappointed.

I got really chocked up at the end of "Big Miracle". I don't care if I have to turn it my man card, but when the whales finally make it to town and the townspeople kill the whales to feed their families, was truly touching.

Well, I think I'll wait till all of these come to redbox. I can't afford to pay $10 to go see a movie. Popcorn??? Forget it! That's another 6 bucks!!! I've got a microwave at home!
