Viral Video Unleashes ‘Carrie’ in a Coffee Shop

It's scary enough watching Carrie wreak havoc with her telekinetic powers on a movie screen. Imagine what it would be like to see it while you were ordering a latte.

For some unsuspecting patrons of a New York City coffee shop, a scary confrontation straight out of a Stephen King novel (and its two movie adaptations) happened right before their eyes. But creating supernatural occurrences in real life takes a lot of planning and effort. Watch the video of the prank inspired by the upcoming new version of "Carrie," then read on to find out how the creative team made it happen (without dumping pig blood on anybody).

The video was the creation of Thinkmodo, the New York-based viral video marketing company. The company previously grabbed headlines with their video that showed a man "hacking" the video screens in Times Square (actually a promotion for the Bradley Cooper movie "Limitless"). And they flew remote control airplanes that looked like flying people over the Hudson River for the superhero flick "Chronicle." But to create a stunt for "Carrie," it took an army of technicians, actors, stunt performers, and one very amenable coffee shop.

Thinkmodo co-founder Michael Krivicka told Yahoo Movies via email that it took an entire day to prepare for the stunt at the 'sNice Cafe in the West Village. Krivicka said, "The stunt team had to build a fake wall and rehearse the wall stunt. A separate crew was installing the hidden cameras and setting up a control room downstairs. A third crew was in charge of the props: spring loaded books, motorized tables & chairs, and spring-loaded picture frames."

Once the effects were in place, it was time to populate the shop with customers, some who were in on it, and others who were not. Krivicka said, "We filled the entire coffee shop with extras who were instructed to react as if they were witnessing things for the first time. Our 'targets' were selected customers who would walk in and place their order at the counter." As the unsuspecting patrons waited for their orders, a man and a woman began arguing over a spilled coffee loud enough to draw attention. And that's when things went nuts.

The "Carrie" of the coffee shop — actually New York actress Andrea Morales — sent the guy flying thanks to a wire rig hidden in the fake wall. The tables scattered via remote control motors, and books flew off the shelves on cue. And the customers who came in for a cup of joe understandably freaked out. "People screamed, they ran, and some were simply stunned and frozen - trying to process what they just saw," Krivicka said. "In other words, we basically scared the living hell out of people." Thinkmodo then compiled the best reactions into their viral video montage.

The prank was a one-time event, so you can go get a coffee at 'sNice without fear of any unexplained phenomena. But you will be able to see a telekinetic girl create mayhem when the new version of "Carrie" starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore hits theaters on October 18.
