Trailer for ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Hits the Web

The new trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" is out and moviebuffs are all over the clip. We think even the most jaded fanboy or fangirl would agree that, all in all, the trailer is stunning. More importantly, it offers up new looks at key characters, amazing effects (watch a football field disappear!), and some timely character motivation.

Perhaps most telling is what Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) whispers to Bruce Wayne while dancing.

"You think this can last," Kyle says, an apparent reference to Wayne's extreme wealth, and a nod to a much darker version of the real life 99% Occupy Movement. "There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches. Because when it hits you're all going to wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us."

The screen then fills with images of mansions being ransacked, the wealthy cowering under antique tables, and prisons exploding with newly freed convicts carrying automatic weapons (natch).

That chilling bit of dialogue is just one of many bits worth noting in a trailer that is chock full of 'em. Alfred, played by Michael Caine, appears to be at a crossroads. The political machine may be turning against the newly-crowned Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman). And Bane (played by Tom Hardy) looks like scariest dude this side of the Joker. "When Gotham is in ashes," he tells a seemingly defeated Bruce Wayne, "you have my permission to die."

Other A-list actors make appearances in the trailer, but they're there and gone so quickly you may not notice. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in there for about half a second, as is Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard. Fans of "Full Metal Jacket" may notice Mathew Modine. And, of course, the Batmobile (which isn't technically an actor, but still) makes an impressive appearance.

See the hottest movie trailers and clips.

Commenters from around the Web are, of course, chiming in with their thoughts. Most are focusing on the movie's seemingly political message. One commenter on EW writes, "GOP fears Batman." Another speculates, "At one event, there are people at a football game. A stadium filled of the working class? At another event, a posh event full of the powerful elite. If that's so, why is Bane attacking the working man? Maybe Bane represents the powerful bully (corporations, 1%) disguised as a working man."

Over at IGN, a poster wrote that he was excited about the trailer but that Bane's voice was hard to understand. "I had to watch it a couple times before I got what he said." Another notes that Bane's dialogue makes him sound a bit like a James Bond villain. And another wrote, "Wow. I got the shivers watching that! This movie is going to be just as good as (if not better) than the Dark Knight!"

Time will tell. The anticipation for the film is huge. This trailer is a strong sign that the third and final Dark Knight film will live up to the hype. We'll know for sure this summer.

As a journalism student, I am on the fence. On the one hand, I am extremely confident that I have the skills that it takes to write for a publication based off of this article, and on the other I am concerned that the standard is sinking like a rock. You obviously have a clear interest in OWS, and are extremely eager to correlate you views into your movie review? If this article would have been under a political category, I wouldn't have cared, but the fact that its under "movie talk" is a little strange. The analogy of comparing Bane to a corporate bully is extremely far fetched, and frankly you're reaching pretty deep for that one. Using language lsuch as the wealthy were "cowering," further shows your eagerness to pigeonhole this movie as a representation of OWS. Having to throw in that the "GOP fears Batman," is another example to jumping to a conclusion. I think you saw what you wanted to see in the movie trailer.

TRAILER LOOKS GREAT!! Just wish they would have portrayed Penguin and the Riddler. My favorite villain will always be JOKER. I never cared for "Bane". Sorry, my opinion!!

You fools, U who think OWS is something new ?? Things have been happening even before OWS... could u image if all the little people joined the movement, and rose against corporate greed and power, governments would fall and large corporations would fail .....

it seems the writer of this article was more concerend about trying to make their OWN political message, rather than writing a factual review of the trailer

Yeah I got that feeling too.

No kidding. I seem to recall this was written and filmed long before any Occupy protests got started.

You do realize the script was finished like a year ago, right? That whatever she's referring to was written LOOONNNNGGGG before Occupy Wall Street existed, right?

Also, if you were paying attention, you'd have heard this takes place 8 years after The Dark Knight so Gordon's no longer "newly-crowned."

The people complaining need to go watch Adam Sandler movies and other garbage if movies without messages or politics is their thing.

I kind of hate that people are taking a 2 minute trailer and trying to fit it into the current political climate. Catwoman is a thief, and I took her dialogue as a justification for her own bad behavior.

Christopher Nolan has two types of villains in the Batman movies-- common criminals like the mob bosses who are motivated by greed, and the super-villains who use a twisted ideology to explain their criminality in broader terms than beyond personal gratification. Ra's al Ghul killed for the "greater good;" the Joker isn't an psychotic serial killer, he merely used chaos to expose hypocrisy by forcing people to reveal their true, evil nature. Hey, Catwoman isn't a thief! She's a proletariat hero fighting the bourgeoisie!

Anyway, that's been my take on it. I could be wrong.

Catwoman is definitely a thief, but she also is a bit of an antihero.

What a surprise another Hollywood leftist communist film pushing the notion that individuals have the right to take from others. Amazing. The nation is so doomed.
      • Bosh 4 months ago
Way to copy and paste that lame comment again. Sad days indeed.

Just because they're referencing the social unrest in OWS and using it as a plot device or theme in their movie doesn't mean they support it. If they truly are showing disinfranchized citizens storming the wealthy, do you honestly think they're saying they're "right", or glorifying them? Or maybe they're pointing out the error of their ways. Maybe you should watch the movie and decide.

lets remember Selina Kyle(Catwoman) is a theif.
    • Mister  •  4 months ago
Kyle is referring to the fact that there is an all-time low in crime and that the police have become heroes and blah blah blah. Nothing relates to 99%, this is just a dumbass of a writer who is trying to cause controversy.
    • AL  •  4 months ago
I find it laughable that this writer is stretching to find a connection and political message in a movie that began filming before OWS started and had the script written well before than based on a character who is older than most in the movie. Also his pointing out that "the wealthy cowering under antique tables" while the mansion is being attacked is ridiculous and agenda driven considering the place is BEING ATTACKED. WTF else would you have these folks doing? If this twat of a writer was in the same situation he would be the asshole hiding behind some little old lady while wetting himself.

Bane's a villain. The only politics villains follow is their own. I wouldn't try to read into it.

dont know if Anne will make a good catwoman having to go dark and all but i didnt think Heath would make a good joker.... boy was i wrong
    • Mad Dog  •  4 months ago
Hate to disappoint you all, but the script was written before the OWS protests.............

    • willgjbf  •  4 months ago
Come on Mike Krumboltz, really? Did you know that Catwoman is a thief? Did you know that the script was written before the 99% movement? There is no political agenda in this movie. This article is laughable.
    • wade  •  4 months ago
Anyone doubting Hardy as Bane needs to watch Bronson. He is going to be another big surprise, just like Heath Ledger's Joker.
    • Kevin B  •  4 months ago
"You think this can last," Kyle says, an apparent reference to Wayne's extreme wealth, and a nod to a much version of the real life 99% Occupy Movement."

You are aware that the idea of BAD people wanting to steal from others and give to... THEMSELVES is much older than the occupoo movement right? Leave your stupid political views out of our movies.
    • Alexander  •  4 months ago
"The epic conclusion" Wait what?! You can't just end Batman in 3 movies! There are soooo many more villains that never got any screen time! What about Penguin, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, et al?! I really want to see some of them get the Christopher Nolan rework.
