New Superman Revealed in First Photo From ‘Man of Steel’

Who's ready to go up, up and away again?

The first photo of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman for the new big-screen version entitled "Man of Steel" was just released Thursday morning.  It shows Superman looking like he's rising to his feet against a smoking, smoldering vault door.

Christopher ReeveThe costume retains the basic look from the comic books: blue with a red cape and boots.  But the suit has a textured, almost rubbery look that's different from previous movie incarnations, like Christopher Reeve's stretchy bodysuit.  The colors look darker and more muted than previous versions of the suit, and the raised "S" insignia on his chest also looks better.  Since he's in shadow its difficult to tell if he's also wearing the classic red trunks which are actually getting eliminated in the upcoming revamp of the "Superman" comic books.

Cavill, a 29-year-old British native best known for the TV series "The Tudors," recently told Total Film magazine that he's been working out and chowing down to get himself into shape for the role.  "I'm on 5000 calories a day," Cavill said, "You've got to eat protein first, then a little bit of carbs."  He needs plenty of fuel for his exhausting workout routine: "I'm training two and a half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits."

It was also announced earlier this week that Cavill will be joined by Laurence Fishburne, who will play Perry White, Clark Kent's editor at the Daily Planet.  Fishburne is just the latest Oscar nominated actor added to the cast, which includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod.  Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner also star as Superman's biological and adoptive father, respectively.

"Man of Steel," directed by Zack Snyder, will not fly into movie theaters until June 14, 2013.  But this November, you can see Henry Cavill in the mythological action spectacle "Immortals."  You can watch the trailer for that below.

Gee, looks sinister in all that dark color. It's not superman. Why do they always mess with a good thing? I can handle change but not that dark evil color.

I wish they would have stayed true to the original comic books. Supermans costume was made from the blankets he was wrapped in, not some spandex or rubber looking one.

Okay everybody, just got a good close up of the costume on another site. The design is good, but the material sucks. It's covered with a criss cross pattern throughout..I can't believe that they are going to use this fabric. It's worse than the material they used to make Brandon Routh's costume. They can't be serious. Bring back the bright colors. Superman doesn't deserve this. Check out some other sites to find a closer look and you'll see what I mean. Terrible.

Just as they were right to use a British kid to play Harry Potter, an American actor should be playing Superman.

Why is his cape so long? This isn't Super Middleton-Wedding Man.

yet here is a chilling fact for every actor that has gained this role only brandon routh hasn't had some sort of tragic accident occur yet cause looking back both christoper reeves and the actor play superman before him have been horribly injured after their time with that character role ended.

It might be good but never as the original Superman movies. Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman.

Are you freakin kidding? Who was the retard who decided that the perfect person to cast for the role of Perry White, an old WHITE GUY, would be Lawrence Fishbourne?!? That is the same exact mistake they made when they cast Michael Clark Duncan to play the Kingpin in Daredevil! STUPID!!!!

i think its time for that S to go, i think the suit would be better without it.

They need to start casting American actors in these roles. Everyone on the Yahoo News thread loves to talk badly about outsoucing of jobs. How is this different?

The fact is no matter who you pick or the special FX you use no one will EVER beat Christopher Reeves as the most loved Superman of all time. Period.

Why does Superman look ..... evil .... in this picture. Seriously, he looks dark and grim and his facial expression is pretty aggressive. Superman was always a kind person with a radiant smile and something like a shining beacon of light and peace. Christopher Reeve was by far the best Superman, there's no doubt. However, Brandon Routhe, not only was handsome enough to play the part well, he also did total honor to Reeves by mimicing a lot of the same body postures and behaviours. He was definitely right up there as the best of the "Supermen".

I'm not sure I'm lking the idea of another "reboot". I'm really getting sick of remakes/revamps/reboots. Some of them are good (like Predators!) But come on, enough IS enough already. Is there no originality left in Hollywood other than James Cameron?

For this aging boomer....George Reeves is "the real Superman" but I am disappointed that the cast of Smallville especially Tom Welling didn't get a crack at the new film. That program kept the Superman character alive outside of the comic books for a decade and Mr. Welling just looked comfortable in the part.
