As our friends at omg! have established, the 48-year-old actor has, in fact, confirmed his $50 million Marvel payday.
And like any wise Vegas shark, he's quitting while he's ahead. (That and his "Iron Man" contract is up after the third installment comes out May 3.) "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun?" Downey told GQ in a recent interview.
But as Downey is yet confirmed to appear in the spring 2015 "Avengers" sequel -- many are wondering if IM3 truly marks the end. He somewhat cryptically indicated a timeline of his commitment to his Iron Man character, likening it to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's three-year contract.
Regardless of when he stops wearing Tony Stark's mechanized suit, when he's freed up, Downey said he hopes to play a Village Voice reporter on the run in a horror film that he also plans to direct. This summer he also appears in "The Judge" with Robert Duvall -- a film he and his wife Susan Downey are producing.
Downey said he is also thinking about moving toward work that is closer to his roots after his "Iron Man" run is complete. "I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood. So there's this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I'm sensing a return to that."
Past reports of his $50 million paycheck for "Marvel's The Avengers" are true, the actor confirmed to GQ with a wide smile on his face, saying, "Isn't that crazy?... They're so pissed. I can't believe it. I'm what's known as 'a strategic cost.'"
Bold moves, Mr. Downey!
"Iron Man 3" enters theaters May 3.
