Ridley Scott to Direct Another ‘Blade Runner’ — It Won’t Be a Remake

Photo: Everett CollectionRidley Scott is returning to his roots, revisiting his definitive -- and beloved -- cyberpunk film "Blade Runner," for Alcon Entertainment.

Filmmakers haven't hired a writer yet, and are still figuring out what the story will be, producer Andrew Kosove told TheWrap Thursday.

"This is arguably the greatest science fiction movie ever made and we're not remaking it," he said. "It's a prequel or a sequel."

Alcon secured the rights to "Blade Runner" for prequels, sequels and other projects last March.

They knew then that they wanted Scott to direct.

Warner Bros. Extends Production Deal With Alcon 2 More Years

"I'm not saying we wouldn't have come up with a Plan B," Kosove, Alcon's co-founder and co-CEO, said. "But the idea was always to go right to Ridley and that's exactly what we did."

Having Scott attached "gives people a level of comfort about how serious we are," Kosove said.

Kosove said the movie's themes "are even more relevant today than they were almost 30 years ago."

The 1982 movie is about Rick Deckard, a "blade runner" played by Harrison Ford. His job is to terminate "replicants," or human clones who are bred to work.

"No one could have envisioned from a technical standpoint how quickly the world would advance over the last three decades," Kosove said. "The question is, 'What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to have humanity? ... Both as a philosophical matter and also as a narrative matter, there are lots of jumping-off points from 'Bladerunner' to make something that is inspired by 'Bladerunner.'"

Kosove said it'll be up to Scott to decide whether to invite Ford to return, but "I do not anticipate it."

    Hollywood Seized by 3D Mania

He said he'd like to have the movie inn production in a year-and-a-half.

"There will be one more announcement we will make before we go dark for a while," he said. "We have to figure out who the writer is going to be and a general framework for the movie."

Alcon bought the rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin, who will produce the new film along with Alcon, Cynthia Sikes Yorkin and Broderick Johnson and Kosove. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, the CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Meanwhile, Scott is in postproduction on "Prometheus," a sort-of prequel to his classic 1979 "Alien," for Fox.

    Deadline first reported the news.

Anybody ever consider doing E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series as movies? A lot of great material there, with a scope that would allow for a lot of movies. Hollywood take note!

Have the creative "juices" dried up?It's not going to be a remake. Really?Change title then, and come up with new ideas, not re-hashed ones. This is an example of a film-maker basically being lazy, for lack of a better word, and a studio, stupid enough,to foot the bill. What's next Mr. Lazy,I mean Mr. Scott, you gonna wait a few yrs and not re-make Robin Hood?

Since all you seem to care about is techo-background music, do us a favor and leave this area to grown-ups

"This is arguably the greatest science fiction movie ever made ... " said Ridley Scott.
Yeah, that is VERY arguable !!! It is a great Sci-Fi film, certainly in the top 100, but it does not make my personal top 10 - or possibly even top 25 - list !!!

Scott didn't say this. Producer Andrew Kosove said it. Scott isn't quite that arrogant, but with Blade Runner, Alien, and Gladiator under his belt, he could be.
Blade Runner is, indeed, the best sci-fi film of all time.

He can't resist remaking it - just as he couldn't resist giving away the answer to the underlying secret of the original in his Director's cut. Just leave it the h*ll along. You want to make a new movie, make a NEW movie!

It's called acting. Anyone can play a role. It just matters whether or not they play it well.

Bring back Harrison Ford as the Bladerunner gone rogue. Bring back his clone girlfriend, except that she'd have to be young, unlike Ford, because of her superior genes. Have him fight to save her, yet again. Give the old hero his last hurrah before killing his character...

I'm just glad its not just another remake. I for one am getting tired of reboots and remakes. It was actually shocking to me when I saw "Super 8" and it was good and original. MORE ORIGINAL FILMS GUYS!
