    Critics’ Reviews: 2/3/12

Photo: Universal Pictures, CBS Films, 20th Century FoxMovies that come out in February have a reputation for being, well, lousy. But this weekend, a couple of new films are earning strong marks from the critics. Here's a quick rundown on the reviews for "The Woman in Black," "Big Miracle," and "Chronicle."

    The Woman in Black
Also known as the scary movie with Harry Potter, "The Woman in Black" stars Daniel Radcliffe as a widowed attorney who visits a town with a tragic secret. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune gives the movie three out of four stars. It "amps up the scares without turning them into something completely stupid," Phillips says. Roger Ebert also gives the movie three stars and writes that film is a success because the "haunted house is the star." Jake Coyle of the Associated Press is slightly less impressed, but does give the film credit for garnering "old-fashioned suspense."

    Big Miracle
Looking for an inspirational family film? Look no further. "Big Miracle," starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, is based on the true story of a group of people who rallyed together to save a family of whales trapped in the Arctic Circle. Roger Moore of McClatchy-Tribune News Service gives the movie three stars out of four and calls it "a charming, feel-good movie that the whole family can enjoy." Nathan Rabin of The Onion's AV Club gives the film a "B," and says it is "far better and far more adult than it really has any right to be."

    Chronicle
It may look like a just another superhero teen flick, but "Chronicle" is the real deal. Roger Ebert says, "Sometimes a movie arrives out of the blue that announces the arrival of considerable new talents." The Arizona Republic's Bill Goodykoontz gives the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, calling it, "a pleasant little surprise." Richard Corliss of TIME is a bit more on the fence. He calls the film "diverting" but "annoying."

The Woman in Black was the best scary movie we have seen in a long time and we have seen them all. Suspensful and scary with out the gore. Daniel was so handsome, sad and brave. Wonderful movie, absolutley loved it.

I absolutely loved this movie. Very suspenseful - many of us in the theater screaming out loud. Best movie I've seed in a long time.

I have to say that "The Woman in Black" was one of the best scary movies that I have seen in a very long time. It had that old fashion scary feel to it, great suspense, and it had wonderful actors in it. Mr. Daniel Radcliffe did a fantastic job and I can't wait to see what he does next.

Like most, I loved the Harry Potter films. I hope that I will be able to see Women in Black and not think of him as Harry the whole time. I seen the previews and it looked like a great movie. I will be going this weekend.

I would rate TWiB a B or B-. Environmentally, it was well-executed. The artistic director and set dressers did a wonderful job on "the house." Radcliffe and the supporting cast played their parts well. The scares were good and not gory (thank goodness.) Overall, however, I felt I was more of a "outside observer" rather than "in" the film, unlike Amenábar's "The Others" which I found rather unnerving (and that's a compliment). If you enjoy classic, gothic ghost stories, you will enjoy TWiB. I wish Mr. Radcliffe a successful and scandal-free career. He's got the skills and talent; let's hope he navigates "the system" with aplomb and dignity.

Saw Daniel Radcliffe on a talk show just this Monday I think it was. He said he didn't mind being known as Harry Potter. He was proud of the movie's that he did for 10 years since he was 11. Said that he was at a Concert and people had spotted him and started Chanting there is only on Harry Potter. He said it was the most amazing feeling he ever felt. But don't worry after a while he will be very poplar with his other movie's.

I saw The Woman in Black last night and it was really good and super creepy. Daniel Radcliffe did a great job and has certainly grown past Harry Potter. I'll be buying it when it hits DVD.
