The youngest Jonas Brother is all grown up and changing his career status from "Boy Band Heartthrob" to "Serious Actor."
It was announced Monday that Nick Jonas will play the male lead in the upcoming drama "Careful What You Wish For," a thriller in which he'll co-star with Isabel Lucas. The film will mark Nick Jonas's first starring role on in a theatrical feature, though he's been transitioning into acting over the past few years since he and his siblings dropped from the top of the pop charts.
In "Careful What You Wish For," Jonas will play Doug, a handsome young man who is spending the summer at the lake. Doug meets Lena (Lucas), a sexy woman living in the cottage next door whose husband, a successful financier, is away most of the time. Doug and Lena fall into an affair, but Doug is soon accused of far more than adultery when Lena's husband dies under mysterious circumstances, and it's revealed he left a lucrative life insurance policy behind. Elizabeth Allen has been confirmed as director on the project; her previous credits include "Aquamarine" and "Ramona and Beezus." Chris Frisina and Gregg Hurwitz penned the screenplay.
Nick Jonas, now 20 years old, rose to pop stardom alongside his older brothers Kevin and Joe in 2007, when Disney-affiliated Hollywood Records released the Jonas Brothers' self-titled second album. "Jonas Brothers" became a chart smash thanks to appearances on several Disney Channel shows (including "Hannah Montana"), and the sibling trio were filling arenas coast to coast after their made-for-cable movie "Camp Rock" premiered on Disney in 2008. In 2010, Nick made his solo debut with the release of "Who I Am" by Nick Jonas and the Administration, and while he continues to make music with his brothers (they're currently in the midst of a successful tour of South America), Nick has been working to establish himself as an actor. Along with the "Camp Rock" movies, he appeared with his brothers on the Disney channel series "Jonas," and has since played roles on the TV series "Last Man Standing" and "Smash."
If Nick's rather adult role in "Careful What You Wish For" seems like a big leap for the former Disney star, the initial box office success of "Spring Breakers," starring fellow Disney vets Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, suggests playing a little less innocent can be a good career move. Jonas can also turn to his co-star Isabel Lucas for career transition guidance; she went from a long-running role on the Australian soap opera "Home And Away" to a big-screen breakthrough in the United States with "Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen" in 2009.
