We'd certainly join a revolution led by Julianne Moore ... even if she were a little crazy.
The theatrical release of "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire" is still several months away but Lionsgate and director Francis Lawrence are already looking to Part 3 (and 4) with the casting of Julianne Moore in the role of Alma Coin in the two-part "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay," according to Deadline.
Alma Coin is the President of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion against President Snow and the Capitol. Despite technically being on the same side as our heroine Katniss Everdeen, she couldn't be more of a polar opposite in terms of personality — in fact, Katniss considers her to be in many ways more power-hungry and ruthless than Snow.
It's interesting that the production would cast such a ravishing beauty as Moore for a character that The Hunger Games Wiki describes as "plain." The 52-year-old Moore will also most definitely be wearing an elaborate wig for the role (as do several of her co-stars in the garishly art-directed series), as Coin is also described as having "grey hair that falls in an unbroken sheet to her shoulders, her eyes a pale grey described by Katniss as being 'like slush that you wish would melt away.'" Moore may also don contact lenses to reflect Coin's "pale grey eyes that could burn straight through you."
Julianne Moore has definitely been into playing characters with grand political ambitions lately. She won a Golden Globe for her performance as Sarah Palin in HBO's "Game Change." And as far a being maniacal goes, Moore will be seen this fall putting her own unique spin on one of the worst screen mothers of all time: the Bible-thumping Margaret White in director Kimberly Peirce's new adaptation of Stephen King's "Carrie."
Moore will also be seen later this year in the fantasy film "Seventh Son" (opening on Oct. 18, the same day as "Carrie") and in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Don Jon" (opening September 27).
Production on "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" will commence soon with a look toward a November 21, 2014 release for Part 1 and November 20, 2015 release for Part 2. Meanwhile, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will open this year on November 22.
