The Hulk Gets a Fresh Start in ‘The Avengers’

Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (Photo: Marvel Studios)In the past decade, there have been two attempts to bring Marvel Comics' "Incredible Hulk" to the big screen.  And neither fully satisfied critics or comic-book fans with how they portrayed Bruce Banner, the mild-mannered scientist who grows into an uncontrollable green monstrosity when he gets angry.

So when writer/director Joss Whedon (creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") was brought aboard "The Avengers" -- next year's movie that teams up the Hulk with fellow superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor -- he had both the opportunity and the challenge of giving the character a fresh start.  Luckily for Whedon, he had a great Oscar-nominated actor, Mark Ruffalo, to help him redefine both Banner and Hulk.

In a phone interview with me this week, Whedon told me that he met with all the actors in "The Avengers," -- including returning stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Samuel L. Jackson -- before he started working on the script to get their perspectives on their roles.  But Whedon said that he did the most character work of all with Ruffalo, "because we really were starting fresh, but we were starting with something that had been embodied several times."

Whedon told me that he and Ruffalo both agreed that they wanted their version of Dr. Banner to follow the model established by Bill Bixby in the '70s TV version of "The Incredible Hulk," rather than how he had been portrayed in the more recent films.  The character on the show, they felt, "was busy helping other people.... That was more interesting to us than the Banner in the first two movies who was always fixated on curing himself."

Once the actor and director found a common vision for how they would handle Bruce Banner's personality, they had to work out the other side of the role: the lumbering, destructive, out-of-control Hulk.  Whedon admitted that he and Ruffalo fought over this.  Physically.  He said, "I mean literally we actually got some pads out and did some tussling.  Just to talk about the physicality of somebody who has to control this thing, and the way he moves in space and the way he relates to the people and the objects around him.  It was extremely fun."

Together, Whedon and Ruffalo worked out not just the dual nature of Banner's personality, but also the two sides to the Hulk's physical presence.  Whedon said, "What we found was that he could be very bumbling and kind of awkward, but at the same time very graceful and in this almost transcendent control of himself."  Their efforts should show on screen as well.  While the Hulk will be a digital creation like in the last two films, this time it will actually be Ruffalo playing the big green guy.  Using motion capture technology like in "Avatar," all of the Hulk's movements and expressions will come from Ruffalo.

You can get a brief look at Ruffalo hulking out in the teaser trailer for "The Avengers" below.  Then click over to read the full text of my interview with Joss Whedon, where we covered working with Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and why he spent as much time writing the big stunts in the movie as he did on the dialogue.  "The Avengers" opens May 4, 2012.

the true problem with the hulk movies is the true origin was taken away period,it was a gamma bomb that created the hulk, not a machine, and the hulk talks, not grunts and growls, even in anger the hulk showed true compassion for his friends, and minus rick jones....no hulk duh, with that being said even with that the hulk kicked #$%$so no need for control,he did control the hulk in case true fans forgot......yeah u did #$%$

At least Lou Ferrigno is doing the Hulk's voice in this one!
      • Rich 5 months ago
Ferrigno did the voice in the past 2 movies also, along with a cameo.

        Yeah what he said

Kind of ironic since he did NOT do the Hulk's voice when he was playing the part in the TV series.

The second hulk movie was off the chain..Ed Norton ripped it in that one...The way HULk looked in that one is whar he should look like in the avengers... he was the right size and it showed that his anger actually made him stronger in that one, with eyes glowing green... That was awesome..

I really liked the Ed Norton version too. I love any thing that he is in. He is a surpurb actor. How ever, for as much as I liked it, I have always loved the Bill Bixby version with Lou Ferigno as the Hulk. Bill made Banner out to be a good guy and a helpful soul. Lou also gave the Hulk that same soul but also showed how mad and brutal he could be if provoked. I think that is the real reason that the TV show worked so well. I just hope that Bill won't be rolling over in his grave. I love Mark Rufffalo and all his acting. That being said, I will watch to see how Mark will interpret the Hulk!!! You rock Mark, make us proud!!!!

If they had done the Ed Nortan version on a smaller budget, it would have been considered a success. Hulk will never be a 300 million cash cow, but that doesn't mean it can't be successful.

Rhonda Bill Bixby did not create the Hulk so we are not trying to model the Hulk after his Hulk. we are trying to find a Hulk that most closely represents what we see in the comics. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the Hulk. I liked Lou as the Hulk too, but he certainly didnt represent the Hulk in the comics. Physically or personalitywise, while Edward Norton's Hulk did.

Ed Norton's Hulk was awesome. And was also based on the 70's show. In the show, ya, he helped people but almost everwhere he went he was looking for a cure. Do people not actually pay attention to the things they are gonna say in these articles?
      • robert t 5 months ago
it's just the writers that don't pay attention. all they look at is one thing, then base an entire article on that. all yahoo writers really should be fired
      • Charles Jannuzi 5 months ago
If I remember, the character would sacrifice a chance at a cure in order to help someone.
      • Crash 5 months ago
Bill Bixby's Banner was constantly finding things that might have cured him of the Hulk, and everytime he would get close he would have to help someone and usually hulk smashed the machine in the fight.

Ruffalo needs to hit it out of the park. 3 different actors in 3 movies? They better get it right this time.

        He wont.

AaronZZZ, dont be stupid...you cant possibly know as you cant see the future.

Give it a chance at least...if not that, then your opinion is of little consequence.

Norton was the best Hulk. They blew it when they let him go.
    • Ken  •  5 months ago
They'll get my money because I liked to be entertained. I don't expect to be blown away everytime I see a movie, but I do like to have fun and my mind taken out of the monotony of the work week.

Yes, back to the basics of movie going. Why does everyone have to be the thumbs up and down movie critic. Some movies may not be great, but they still entertain, that was there intent

Say what you want about cheezy 70's TV, Bill Bixby was a pretty top actor in his day and he defined the screen presence of David Banner. They are probably smart to try to pick up some his take on the character.

Why do puny humans always hound Hulk! Leave Hulk alone, or Hulk will smash puny humans! Now go away puny humans, before Hulk smash!
    • Jeff  •  6 months ago
Liked the 2nd Huk movie. Hulk should be CGI just for the fact that he's massive and bulky. No 6 1/2 or 7 foot tall actor can pull that off.

I keep hoping for a better Punisher movie.

"The character on the show, they felt, "was busy helping other people.... That was more interesting to us than the Banner in the first two movies who was always fixated on curing himself." Um , Hello Bruce Banner IS fixated with curing himself, but it just seems that with every episode, he would get side tracked from his goal cause some one is in a bind and Bruce is not the type of guy to let bad things happen to good people. Bruce's goal is not to go from town to town and seek out trouble makers. His agenda has always been, to just keep moving, keep a low profile, and chase down any possiblty of a cure. I thought the Hulk movie with Ed Norton as Bruce Banner was right on point. Both in how Ed Played Bruce and the way they protrayed the Hulk. It was by far the best Hulk movie so far.

When are they going to make a Silver Surfer movie without the fantastic 4?????
    • J  •  5 months ago
Should have used Ed Norton- he was a great hulk and that movie was awesome.

this article is inaccurate. Both Bana and Norton did motion capture acting for the hulk in their films and they are not starting completely fresh, and they are not re-imagining the character. They are just trying to find a way to make Ruffalo work for the film since they couldn't work things out with Norton who is way more respected and talented as an actor than Ruffalo. Another thing i found annoying was that this article suggests a lot of things that are actually not that different from one or the other of the previous films, one point in particular was the idea of the television show version, which was also something Norton was trying to do, the problem with the previous Hulk films, were not the actors' portrayals of Banner and Hulk, but the directorial vision and writing of those films. This should have been addressed further instead of acting like the savior of the Hulk is Ruffalo, when clearly, if Hulk is done well in this film it will be because Whedon was the right man for the job which I am confident that he is. Whedon's history with comics, and his knowledge of fanboy eagerness is what will bring this film to life. That, and his great writing and directorial talents that may gain massive commercial success finally. He deserves it. Ruffalo..... not as much.

They should do the infinity series.
    • Punch in chest  •  5 months ago
Banner was never about helping others with his curse to begin with fool. the last two were more accurate anyway. They 70's were more innocent times for TV it doesn't mean they knew what they were doing. And Edward Norton's Hulk surpassed expectations I don't know where you're getting your sources from other than up your #$%$
