These two have come a long way since being, to paraphrase Steve Rogers himself, "kids from Brooklyn."
Rogers (Chris Evans) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) fought side-by-side against the evil forces of HYDRA in "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011). Now, the former war buddies are battling each other, as illustrated by a stunning new piece of concept art (courtesy of A-list superhero artist Ryan Meinerding) for next spring's sequel, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier.," on display at Entertainment Weekly.
When last we saw poor Bucky on screen, he was plummeting to what we assumed was his icy death as he fell from a speeding train and into a snowy abyss. But as many Marvel fans already know, that's not really the end for Mr. Barnes, as he's destined to be resurrected and reprogrammed as a ruthless assassin known as the Winter Soldier, which makes the fight all the more personal — and heartbreaking — for Cap.
Marvel has been releasing a piece of concept art from one of its upcoming films the week before Comic-Con for a few years now, and this year's peek at the "Captain America" sequel foreshadows quite an epic battle. Cap vs. Winter Soldier makes for the main focus, but in the background you can see Falcon (Anthony Mackie) flying through the air and firing twin guns at enemies below as well as a couple of advanced-looking aircraft shooting down on ground forces. It's worth noting that while "Cap 1" mostly took place during World War II, "Cap 2" is a modern-day adventure that takes shortly after the events of "Marvel's The Avengers" (2012).
The concept art also gives us a good look at Cap's new costume, which is apparently inspired by the uniform he wore in the 2010 comic book mini-series, "Steve Rogers: Super Soldier," written by Ed Brubaker. In that mini-series, Rogers took on the new outfit after Barnes, whom Rogers had "cured" of his brainwashed evil, took over the Captain America mantle himself after Rogers' own supposed death.
Even though the events of "Steve Rogers: Super Soldier" are a bit further down the road from the plot of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," it makes sense that Marvel would implement a do-over for Cap's costume for the sequel. They went the traditional route with Rogers' first couple of appearances as they presented a beloved comics character for the first time on the big screen; to stray too far from the costume we're all familiar with from the comics would've been a bit jarring (and decidedly un-American!). Now, we know Chris Evans' Cap and we know him well, so it's time to rework him for the 21st century, where we like our superheroes ... well, dark, as further evidenced by the darker blues worn by Henry Cavill in this summer's "Man of Steel."
Marvel Studios will present footage from "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" on Saturday, July 20 at the San Diego Comic-Con. The film will hit theaters on April 4, 2014.
