First Set Photos From the ‘Star Trek’ Sequel

"Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Spock"?

The first photos from the set of the sequel to 2009's "Star Trek" have leaked, and from what we can see it looks like it will be just as action-packed as its predecessor.  What's more, the shots give us the first look at the villain from the film currently in production.

The photos show Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana returning to the roles of Spock and Uhura, along with new cast member Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays their still-unnamed adversary.  The actors were photographed while they rehearsed and shot a fight scene on a large exterior set in front of a green screen (the background will be added in later digitally).

Benedict Cumberbatch is a British actor who broke out playing the lead role in "Sherlock," the BBC's modern-day Sherlock Holmes series.  In 2011, he appeared in two critically acclaimed films: "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" opposite Gary Oldman, and Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated "War Horse."  It had originally been announced that Benicio del Toro would be the bad guy in the new "Star Trek," but after he dropped out of the project Cumberbatch was cast in his place.

    [Related: Academy Awards this Sunday]

Little is known about the character Cumberbatch will play, but we can gather some clues from the photos.  He appears to be wearing a black Starfleet shirt like Kirk wore in the first movie before he was made an officer.  He's apparently strong enough to tussle with Spock, but his rounded ears would indicate he's not a Vulcan.  And it looks like he made Uhura mad enough to blast him with her phaser (presumably set to stun, not to kill).

Director J.J. Abrams and the cast from the last movie are all returning for the next installment, but it will not beam into theaters until May of 2013.

I was 6 years old when I saw Star Trek for the first time. It was on September 8th 1966 and the episode was entitled "The Man Trap". After watching it, I went to bed and had a nightmare. The salt monster was coming to get me. It was just horrible. I've been a Star Trek fan ever since. May prosperity find you worthy!

Yep... and no Kirk and Sulu doing time on the Yorktown... No Sam Kirk, his wife and son... No character mentioned who we later learned was Carol Marcus... The changes go on and on. Well, that's Alternate Reality for ya.

I have been watching since the late sixties if any show has made a impact in the American culture it is Star Trek!. Gene Roddenburys vision was second to none. I was extremley satisfied with JJ Abrams first installment of a true Iconic TV series that has transended the American culture in what we expect of the future it amazes me just to see some one flip open a cell phone and talk. Hey Beam me up Scotty!. Just wait when we can break a molecule down and reform (Transporter)who needs to pay $8.00 gal for gas. One day we will have a resourced based economy and not based a monatary system and the republican and democratic greed will end for all man kind!

      That is my vision

The reason for Star Trek's legendarily loyal fans is because Roddenberry stood up to the media moguls and created something cerebral that wasn't afraid to go deep - counter to the industry wisdom dictating shallow action plots.
This is why Star Trek was cancelled after only two seasons - and why it was brought back for a third after the first and only successful letter-writing campaign in the history of media.

If the modern stewards of Star Trek don't have the cojones to stand up for the vision as Gene Roddenberry did, then they should do something else. Get it right.

I was 16 when Star Trek debuted on TV and have been a fan of any "space" movie, good or bad. Don't care if it is old or new I enjoy watching Star Trek and will go see the new movie at least twice, probably more.
