It looks like there's actually going to be a "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie as the director of the long in-development production has finally been chosen.
Sam Taylor-Johnson has been named as the official helmer of the screen adaptation of E L James' runaway hit novel that chronicles the steamy relationship between mysterious 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and naive but eager college student Anastasia Steele.
"Sam's unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia's relationship to life," said co-producer Michael De Luca in the official press release. "E L James' characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit."
Sam Taylor-Johnson (formerly Taylor-Wood), a famed photographer and visual artist turned filmmaker, made her directorial debut with 2009's "Nowhere Boy," a chronicle of the early years of John Lennon, played by future "Kick-Ass" star Aaron Johnson. The director and her star were later married, despite her being 23 years his senior.
Does this mean Aaron Taylor-Johnson — the couple hyphenated their surnames after getting married — is now the top contender to play Christian Grey? Probably, even if only unofficially.
Universal and Focus Features acquired the screen rights to "Fifty Shades of Grey" and its two sequels way back in March 2012, and several names have been rumored to be in the running for the director's chair (or is it bed?) ever since, including Angelina Jolie, Paul Verhoeven ("Basic Instinct") and Joe Wright ("Anna Karenina," which costarred Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Gus Van Sant was particularly interested in the project, even going so far as filming a sex scene between Christian (played by Alex Pettyfer) and Anastasia as a calling card.
Well, we've got a director. Now all we need is a cast, a bedroom set and start date and we're ready to commence with one of the most highly anticipated cinematic romps between the sheets of all time.
