Exclusive Clip: Cameron Diaz Is a Man-Eater in ‘The Counselor’

If the trailer for "The Counselor" didn't provide enough of an indication, a new clip from the film all but confirms that Cameron Diaz is the resident femme fatale of the new star-studded thriller directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy.

The clip features Malkina (Diaz) enjoying a stunning desert view (it's a Ridley Scott movie, so you know it looks pretty) as Reiner (Javier Bardem) serves her a drink, courtesy of the bar he seems to keep out of the back of his truck. The duo share a cryptic McCarthy-esque exchange, in which Malkina says that the reason she doesn't "miss" things because that implies you want them to come back. The conversation turns slightly sinister when Malkina tells Reiner, who's obviously more taken with her than she is with him, that he reminds her of someone ... who's dead.

Both the trailer and the clip reveal the intense look that Diaz has in the film. The feline eye makeup, sharp nails, multiple tattoos and — if you look closely enough — a gold tooth help bring to life a character that's a far cry from the sweet Mary in "There's Something About Mary," the mousey Lotte Schwartz in "Being John Malkovich" and even the sexy but bats**t insane Julie Gianni in "Vanilla Sky." And while Diaz has played shady characters before (the foul-mouthed, outrageously amoral Elizabeth Halsey in "Bad Teacher" comes to mind), this might be her first turn as a truly manipulative and powerful seductress, a sort of more refined variation on Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal) on "Sons of Anarchy."

Plot details on "The Counselor" are being somewhat kept under wraps, though we do know that it involves a lawyer (Michael Fassbender, currently credited only as 'The Counselor' in true McCarthy fashion) who's "been bad" and gotten involved with drug trafficking, an operation seemingly run by Reiner. The film also features Brad Pitt wearing a cowboy hat as a mysterious character named Westray (Brad Pitt) and Penelope Cruz as the Counselor's ladyfriend, who also seems to be of interest to Malkina as evidenced by their poolside exchange in the trailer.

"The Counselor" will hit theaters on October 25.
