Director David O. Russell's next project, previously titled "American Bulls***," has been given a new, more general audience appropriate title "American Hustle," as reported by Box Office Mojo. The title change is just the latest bit of buzz surrounding the project, as Russell's Hollywood stock was already trading high after last year's Oscar-winning, critical and audience darling "Silver Linings Playbook."
The major selling point for "Hustle" is its star-studded cast (and the over-the-top hairstyles they're sporting for the film), which reunites Russell with his "Playbook" actors, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro, along with his "Fighter" cast members Christian Bale and Amy Adams, plus several other notable names and seasoned professionals: Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston and Michael Pena.
The film is based on the true story of the ABSCAM sting operation that took place in the late 1970s on Long Island. The story revolves around notorious financial con artist Melvin Weinberg (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime Maxine Gardner (Adams), who were later forced to cooperate with an out of control federal agent Jimmy Boyle (Cooper) to help uncover other con artists, mobsters, and corrupt politicians. Lawrence fits into the mix as Weinberg's wife and Renner as passionate and volatile New Jersey state senator and assembly leader Angelo Errichetti.
Russell told IndieWire last year that the film will be a blend of comedy and drama, due in large part to the fact that the true story is "stranger than fiction," and that his actors are fully embodying their real-life characters. "They're very intense in an insane drama," he said.
"American Hustle" is currently filming in Worcester, Massachusetts, a city that is 45 miles away from Boston and as such was not directly affected by the tragic bombing in Boston on Monday (April 15), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is scheduled for release in December.
