    Clark Gable’s Secret Daughter Dies

photo by Everett CollectionJudy Lewis, the secret daughter of screen stars Clark Gable and Loretta Young, has died at 76. But her fascinating story lives on.

Lewis was conceived while Young was unwed and Gable was married to his second wife, Maria Langham. The two were filming "The Call of the Wild." Their affair resulted in a super secret pregnancy and a hush-hush birth. The actress left her love child at an orphanage for 19 months, returning only then to adopt her. Clearly, this was long before the Internet, DNA testing, or baby daddies.

To add to the mystery, Young kept her daughter in the dark about her family history. Born on November 6, 1935, Judy was eventually raised by her mother and Young's husband, Tom Lewis, whose last name she took. Lewis never did have a relationship with her biological father, although when she was 15, Gable visited her without telling her why. It took 31 years for her to learn the truth, which her mother told her privately but would not admit to publicly.

As Lewis told the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1994, when she finally wrote a memoir of her parents' romance and subsequent cover-up: "It was very difficult for me as a little girl not to be accepted ... by my mother, who to this day will not publicly acknowledge that I am her biological child."

Loretta Young and Judy Lewis (photo by Everett Collection)Young eventually did admit that Lewis was her daughter with Gable in her authorized biography, "Forever Young," which was published after her death in 2000.

In fact, Lewis resembled her dad, and according to the New York Times, she was teased in school because her ears "stuck out like Dumbo's. Or, as Hollywood rumors had it, they stuck out like Clark Gable's." Her mother hid them under hats, and had her daughter undergo plastic surgery at age 7 to make them less Gable-like.

The daughter of Hollywood royalty first followed an acting career, with roles in "General Hospital," but left the theatrical world to become a therapist. By the time she was a young woman, it was an open "secret" that her father was Clark Gable. Even her husband, Joe Tinney, told her before he married her that it was "common knowledge" that Gable was her dad, but she didn't believe him.

In her 1994 memoir, "Uncommon Knowledge," Lewis notes that her mother's career would have ended if she had admitted to the out-of-wedlock birth. In her book, Young, who was Catholic, tells her, "Wouldn't you [be unhappy] if you were a movie star and the father of your child was a movie star and you couldn't have an abortion because it was a mortal sin?"

Lewis is survived by her daughter, two grandsons, and two half-brothers -- and a solid place in Hollywood lore.

How things have changed -- people today wouldn't think a wit about it. In fact, many movie stars today make a big deal out of being knock up out of wedlock.

How things have changed--for the worse. At least they were ashamed of themselves even if they did everything else wrong. People today have no shame, and even glorify evil. It's depressing.

Amen to the no shame by today's popular figures. It is a where a society ends up when they turn their back on God and call evil good and good evil!

They have no shame, but at least "most" of them accept and love their children. I find the secret worse than today's vanity games. While now the whole world of adults get to be annoyed with famouse people at least their children (for the most part) are loved.

They sure have!!! Now, it's almost the thing to do, have babies and NOT get married - ie., Kourtney Kardishian, etal. It's almost as if they're proud of it, too.

For the older people out there....how many remember the Loretta Young Show? The beginning of the show was my favorite part, she would come sauntering down a big staircase, with big flowing dresses on. As a little girl, I thought that was so Hollywood, and she was so beautiful! LOL
      • RB 5 months ago
Ah yes I remember it well.

Yes! and she would make the dress flare around her as she stepped off the staircase. And the show was always something uplifting.

Did Mr Gable ever realize what he missed? She was gorgeous...
      • Library Lady 5 months ago
I assume you mean Judy was gorgeous? Yes, she was, and it's just possible that Mr. Gable _did_ realize what he had missed. For years I thought he was being a male chauvinist when he was quoted as saying "I'd give my right arm for a SON"--instead of just a _child_. Lately, I've been thinking that he specified "son" because he already had a daughter...even if he could never publicly acknowledge her. So sad...:-(

I suppose if she was homelier, he would have missed less...?

It took him 15 yrs to see the girl wether that is his fault or the mothers who knows.

Wow. That comment by her mother... that breaks my heart. No child or adult child should hear that from a parent. I hope that Ms. Lewis now knows what it's like to be truly accepted by a her heavenly Parent.

The comment made to her child was probably more out of guilt, implanted by her Catholic upbringing, which always imposes fear of damnation and hellfire into their blind followers. I saw my mother suffer from guilt for aborting a child during the 30s depression. She had my brother and I who she could barely feed so she did the unforgivable, according to the church who can't even deal with their own sins.

You are right, Blessed. Ro, get off your ridiculous Catholic bashing. There is NO SUCH THING as an unforgivable sin and as for your remarks about a church which (not 'who'..that is grammatically incorrect when speaking of an entity) can't even deal with their own sins, it shows your ignorance. Human beings commit sins; an organization cannot commit a sin.I feel sorry for your poor mother but certainly not for your narrow-mindedness.
      • Ms. 5 months ago
Um, Ro, you don't tell a child "I would have aborted you, but I would have felt guilty about doing it. But I wanted to . . . I just couldn't." I understand the guilt you will feel from a church, but you don't tell a child that you were unhappy because you couldn't abort them. Guilt from a the church or not, that is TERRIBLE. You don't tell your child, whom you won't even acknowledge as your own biological child, "I would have killed you if I could've."

A good woman and a contributor to society as a therapist. Even if she contributed nothing, I'm glad she wasn't aborted.

She was stunning and a dead ringer of her father.

Secrets suck.....My mother is 65 and her mother 85 still wont tell her who her real father is....what a shame...so who are we ???? what is a family tree ...with all these Secrets
    • Thomas W. Muther Jr.  •  5 months ago
She was beautiful--not surprising considering who her parents were.
    • S.T.  •  5 months ago
I doubt they are the only ones out there. It's a shame these 'love children' as it were are kept from knowing their real parents.
Don't forget Arnold baby amongst them.

Times have changed...My mother had me out of wedlock when she was 17,there was no father around, although my grandparents and great nan did meet him..We lived with my great nan,my grandparents had the house next door,in a well to do suburb in Adelaide, and my nan looked after me while mother went to work..This is in the 60s.Although nan was respected,my mother wasnt, and neighbors would cross the road when theyd see her, with and without me..Im glad for Judy that her mother finally acknowledged that Clark gable was her father, but i also see it as wasted years..31 wasted years. Rest in Peace Judy.May you finally be reunited with your father....

My, how times have changed. I'm not sure which is better in the long run...the hypocrisy of the old days or the rampant "baby daddies" today.
    • Denu  •  5 months ago
How horrible for a mother to say that to a child...my mother told me i was a mistake!!!! How can mother's be so cruel is beyond me? I hope that Judy at least had a loving and happy relationship with her husband and kids...May her soul rest in peace....

Clark Gable and Loretta Young both were great in any movie that were in.

Am I the only person who does not like the term "baby daddies"? It should be "baby's daddy"? Its time we started using proper grammar and stopped with the dumbing down of our society. Please stop accepting terms of the undereducated.

She is here because that was part of our LOURDS plan.It was GOOD.

Our family knew her, she was a fine woman and dealt well with what she was given, two very famous parents, secrets and the public eye. May she rest in peace and love.
    • Fire2Ice  •  5 months ago
Actually, she looks a lot more like Loretta Young than Clark Gable to be honest. Today, it would be public knowledge and people wouldn't even think much about it...enter John Edwards, the scuzball, and several other Dads that fathered children out of wedlock.
    • Linda  •  5 months ago
A different time, different era. Sad for the girl though. It was difficult for women to find jobs then, not like now. If Young's career had tanked she may not have been able to support the child and obviously Gable wouldn't. I guess males walking away from their responsibilities isn't new. Females either. Glad she didn't abort. Lewis was a beautiful woman and apparently improved her corner of the world by working with those with problems.
