New Biracial Spider-Man Causes Controversy on the Web

There have been plenty of upgrades to the Spider-Man franchise lately: Andrew Garfield has replaced Tobey Maguire in the 2012 movie reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Over in the comic book world, the change to the Spider-Man character has been rocking the Web. Meet Miles Morales, the half-black, half-Latino teenager who takes over when (spoiler alert!) Peter Parker is killed.

Before anyone gets too upset, keep in mind that, first, the September relaunch of "Ultimate Spider-Man" is an alternate universe from the Marvel comic book series in which the original Peter Parker is alive and well. Second, these characters are just that -- not real.

But try and tell that to the blogosphere. News of the new, ethnic Spider-Man rocked the Web. Searches spiraled upward in just one day on "new black spiderman," "miles morales," and this mouthful: "miles morales the multicultural spiderman."

Opinion was fast and furious. Some dismissed the new superhero as "politically correct." (And that's one of the more printable comments.) On the Marvel site, comments were mixed. One complained, "This is not Spider-Man. Only Peter Parker is Spider-Man. R.I.P. Spidey." Another wanted to know, "Why couldnt he be Asian, there are plenty of blacks in comics already." One sent this approving message, "Way to go Marvel for blazing the way!!!! God bless America and Spiderman ... a true American hero!!!"

Sports fans have been talking up the link between the new Spidey and Tiger Woods. Other commenters suggested a connection with a young President Obama.

Even the fake-conservative news host Stephen Colbert jumped into the fray, joking that the the nonwhite character was stealing Peter Parker's job.

Over at USA Today, a commenter defended the new Spidey: "I for one am glad to see this ... whatever way we can express equality, fine."

Alexandra Petri, in the Washington Post, opined that "[t]he response to the black Spiderman shows why we need one."

The creator of Miles Morales is one Brian Michael Bendis, who was inspired to develop a biracial character when he heard "Community" actor Donald Glover was campaigning for the movie role of Spider-Man. He thought, "Oh, I would so like to read that book." And then remembered that he could -- if he wrote it.

The writer added, "Even though there's some amazing African American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it's still crazy lopsided."

It seems the time for Miles Morales has come.

I am not a die hard comic book fan...so at first glance of this article I thought ok a bi-racial Spider Man sounds cool! I am a '70's baby so I longed to see more TV characters that looked like me! I loved Eartha Kitt as Cat Woman on Bat Man! BUT, after reading the post of the true comic book readers, I can understand the desire to keep Spider Man as is, & it probably would be better to create a new super hero...hopefully more than one to represent all of us!

Exactly, this isn't a racial thing as most make it out to believe and as few go as far to make it look that way. I'm a comic book reader and i don't mind if the new spiderman is black/white/green/etc and has the same spiderman powers, just call him something else.

I also, don't believe that this is a racial thing, just an attempt to explore these bigger than life comic book characters from another perspective, to see how it plays.

I think characters from any race could stand on their own, if the writing were good. No need to change the Marvel flagship in order to make great and inspiring minority characters. Create new and inspiring characters from all walks. We are all, after all, from one race.

If they made Bruce Banner black, would he still turn into a green hulk?
      • alpha1 9 months ago
        No, he'd turn brown!
      • John Doe 9 months ago
I actually liked him better in the comics as a gray hulk.

I guess this is the first of many changes Disney is planning to do in the hopes of boosting Marvels sales. What the P.C. Watchdogs should be doing is creating brand new characters that do not have millions of loyal fans and decades of baggage. I view Spider Man and Nick Fury sudden ethnicity change to be no better than revisionist history.

        What is next, Snow African-American?

This is not Disney. But I like M E's idea of creating new heros.

Nick Fury has been switching races for years so I don't know what's so sudden about that. Nobody knows what his ethnicity is anymore. He's just like Lex Luthor.

No Black Super Hero's? What about Blankman And Other Guy?? They were AWSOME!!!!
    • Greg B  •  9 months ago
      Im an African American guy,
I have a theroy on why there are more whites on tv, super heros, and celbertys. I actualy belive it may be due o the fact that blacks repersent only about 15 percent of america. Most of america is white and hispanic. So maybe there are more whites on commercials, tv's, and movies, becuase they have most of the american population. So it would be easier to find sum1 from 70 or 80 percent of america rather han 15 percent. I do not think that whites in commercials, superheros, movies and tv are nessasirly a sighn of racism, rather they can be a sighn of population.

this is what happens when hollywood tries to be "hip" and "edgy"

Some things need to be left as they are. It was crazy enough to have Michael Clarke Duncan play Kingpin in the movie Daredevil, it didn't fit. It didn't fit either to have Samuel L Jackson play Nick Fury in Iron Man / Avengers. This doesn't fit either. I'm all for diversity (obviously, I'm black), but come on, you don't just go and change someone's race like that. What's next, an asian Thor? What about a latino Superman? Leave things like they originally were.
    • Brian  •  9 months ago
Not all blacks like changes in American superhero’s. I’m a black male and I don’t like a black Spiderman, Superman or a black Wonder women, (well maybe a black WW would be okay).

Nothing to do with race issues, but Spider-man is Peter Parker. I never supported Ben Riley (a cloned CAUCASIAN), I will not support this. It's not about the color of the skin, it's about the character. And Peter Parker is the character I choose to support as Spider-man. No ifs, no buts. It's Peter Parker, or I won't read. When ultimate Peter Parker seemingly "died" (which I am betting isn't the case), it's my last Ultimate Spider-man issue (well, at least for the time being), until they reveal that he is just being hidden by Shield (or something).

Let me say that I am white. And I am EMBARRASSED by all the racial hatred. This is the freakin' USA right? The country of tolerance. Yes, Peter Parker was white. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, if they were REINVENTING Peter and changing him to black/hispanic then I'd have a problem with that. But, this is not the case. This is a whole new spiderman. And why in this world can't he be black, or mexican or any other race? For that matter, if there was a NEW batman, superman, wonderwoman, wolverine, galactus, silver surfer, hawkman, or anyone else that was any other race then white, i wouldn't even think twice. People, they are not replacing peter parker or any other hero. He is still white. And he is dead. The new spiderman is black. I am fine with that. There is no political correctness here. Political correctness would assume they are changing the real history to make more non white heroes. This is a new hero. He might not even be bitten by a bug. Who knows. this is not the reincarnation of Peter. He (or she for that matter) may be the next person to be bitten by a radioactive spider and he is a black/hispanic kid. That is realistic (as comics go anyways). You people need to deal with the fact that superheroes and villains can be more then just caucasians. There are plenty of minority kids that are brilliant and could be spiderman. I am ashamed by all this hatred. Just ashamed.

Great.... now I'm just waiting to find out that wolverine is gay, cyclops is really a transgender russian, and storm and rogue are lesbians.

Well.... I guess the last one wouldn't be bad lol.
    • ANDREW  •  9 months ago
mixed guy here, it really wouldnt matter if the new spidey was part gorilla part shark it would still suck, spidey is peter parker. race isnt the issue its the murder of one peter parker that needs to be called out. miles morales sounds like a great read but he should have had his own spin off, hell they made carnage work and he has a off the wall story line, not to mention that four armed dopelganger creep. point is you dont stop serving the best sellin dish to try a new recipe.
    • Brittany  •  9 months ago
Wow.... just wow. spiderman is always going to be white. it can never change!
    • livin'roomstreetfight ...  •  9 months ago
Why does he have to be a man, as in a human? He can't just be a huge, crime-fighting spider? We still have a long road ahead when it comes to equality in representation.
    • akaturdherder  •  9 months ago
Next they will make him a gay spider??? #$%$?????
    • JMarble  •  9 months ago
Equality for all...Black Spiderman, Midget Hulk, White Storm, Down Syndrome Superman, Asian Batman, Green Lantern with Schizophrenia...Why not?
    • Kyle  •  9 months ago
Would this even be an issue if they still killed off Peter Parker and replaced him with another white guy?
