It really does run in the family.
Disney has released the first trailer for "Maleficent" -- the live-action take on "Sleeping Beauty" starring Angelina Jolie as the pointy-headed, sharp-cheeked (but ultimately misunderstood?) wicked witch -- and the teaser lets you really see and hear her in character for the first time. On top of that, though, you get a brief glimpse of another member of the Pitt-Jolie clan: 5-year-old Vivienne.
Watch the First Teaser Trailer for 'Maleficent':
Vivienne has a small role in the movie as the young version of Princess Aurora, and she can be spotted in the teaser trailer chasing a butterfly through a meadow. Jolie said this summer at Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California that her daughter won the role because she wasn't intimidated by mom's extreme makeup.
Jolie also told fans at D23 that when visitors would bring their children to the set, her frightening look would make the little ones run off screaming. "One little kid even said, 'Mommy, please tell the mean witch to stop talking to me,'" Jolie recounted. But one little girl wasn't afraid. "Vivienne was the only 4-year-old who wouldn't scream," she said.
Vivienne will even have some lines in the film, which marks her big-screen debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. And her older siblings Pax, 9, and Zahara, 8, will also have cameo appearances.
Elle Fanning, 15, plays the older Princess Aurora in "Maleficent," and she also got her start in movies working with family. She played the younger version of her sister Dakota in 2001's "I Am Sam" when she was just 2. By that standard, Vivienne is practically a late bloomer. Elle also worked with Vivienne's dad, Brad Pitt, when she played the younger version of Cate Blanchett's character in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."
Of course, "Maleficent" isn't just a Jolie family home movie. It's got castles, creatures, magic, and one very foreboding spinning wheel. It's from the writer, producer, and production designer of the billion-dollar worldwide hit "Alice in Wonderland," so you can expect another visually imaginative reinvention of a Disney classic.
"Maleficent" opens nationwide on May 30, 2014.
