Good news for those who are quaking at the idea of a musical-themed Oscar ceremony this Sunday: the show's producers hit at least one right note with the announcement that Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman will appear as presenters. Both of these Academy Award veterans have won Best Actor gold twice. And they might very will be handing a trophy to Daniel Day-Lewis, who might very well win for a history-making third time.

In a statement released this morning to Entertainment Weekly, the ceremony's producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Maron, said, "Between the two of them Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman have created more iconic characters than any other pair of actors in the world. Their participation in this year's Oscars completes a list of presenters and performers that truly represents that great breadth and depth of acting talent in film today."

Although odds makers would definitely favor Daniel Craig over Ben Whishaw if the two ever came to fisticuffs, the two “Skyfall” actors may be more evenly matched than their radically different physiques would suggest.

  • Sandra Bullock to star in ‘Despicable Me’ spinoff

Photo: GettyFinally, Sandra Bullock is getting the chance to show the dark side that those who suffered through “Hope Floats” always knew she possessed. The perennially sunny star will voice Scarlet Overkill, the resident super-villain of “Minions,” the upcoming spin-off of 2010’s “Despicable Me.”

As Deadline reports, Bullock’s character will pair high fashion with sky-high ambitions to become the world’s first lady super-villain. Set in the 1960s, the animated comedy will feature its title characters vying for the opportunity to be Bullock’s henchmen, a job previously held by Jesse James. The 3D CG film, which will be directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, is a production of Universal and Illumination Entertainment. It’s scheduled to be released on December 19, 2014; in the meantime, “Despicable Me 2,” starring Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Al Pacino, will hit screens on July 3 of this year and attempt to surpass the $540 million the original made worldwide.

As Deadline reports, Depp recently signed on to star as Bulger, whom Federal prosecutors have indicted for 19 murders.

  • Jeremy Renner signs on for ‘Kill the Messenger’

Jeremy Renner is a man in possession of impressive pectoral muscles and even more impressive powers of distraction. Barely a week after his latest effort, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” became one of the worst-reviewed films of 2013 (quoth Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, “a lame-brained, limp dick attempt to update a classic Brothers Grimm tale”), Renner has made us all forget about his leather-clad fairy tale frolic with the news that he’ll star in and co-produce “Kill the Messenger,” a thriller directed by Michael Cuesta.

  • Ashton Kutcher hospitalized while preparing to play Steve Jobs

It seems that Method acting can cost you more than body mass and basic personal hygiene. As Ashton Kutcher found out, it can also (almost) cost you your pancreas.

To prepare for his title role in "jOBS," which premiered at Sundance last week, the actor got into character as Steve Jobs by adopting the Apple co-founder's alleged fruitarian diet. The diet, which consists of fruit, nuts, and seeds, is typically followed by those who will eat only foods that can be harvested without killing or damaging the plant. It's ideal for those who consider veganism flagrantly permissive, and also lack a fear of gastrointestinal distress.
