  • 'The Karate Kid' vs. 'Spider-Man': Vote for the Greatest Summer Movie Ever

Which teen outcast will swing through Round 1 of the Summer Showdown?

Summertime means summer movies, and this year could be one of the biggest season's ever. But which blockbuster of the past is truly the best? We've pitted 32 of the most successful and beloved summer movies against each other. And now you get to decide which is your favorite. After four rounds of voting, only one movie will be left standing. Which title will be declared the greatest summer movie of all time?

    The Karate Kid

    Release date: June 22, 1984

The first true get-up-and-cheer underdog story since "Rocky" (1976), "The Karate Kid" showed us that all any bullied new kid in town (in this case, Ralph Macchio's Daniel-san) really needs is a Japanese gardener who knows martial arts (Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi). A classic tale of pride and dignity as well as one of the best mentor-apprentice stories ever (ever), "The Karate Kid" taught us that a little wax-on, wax-off goes a long way.

    Spider-Man

    Release date: May 3, 2002

Then again, who needs Mr. Miyagi when you have a radioactive spider? Peter

    Ghostbusters

    Release date: June 8, 1984

Who you gonna call? Ivan Reitman's truly brilliant piece of gonzo pop art is without a doubt one of the funniest movies ever made, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis defending New York City from supernatural menaces with droll wit and "Hey, it's a living" casualness. It also makes for quite the occasionally unsettling horror film, with Dana's (Sigourney Weaver) possession by the demonic Zuul and a jailhouse description of the mighty Gozer mixing in a few shivers with the laughs. There's never been a movie quite like it. Well, maybe

    E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

    Release date: June 11, 1982

One of Steven Spielberg's most personal films, "E.T." revealed the world's most popular moviemaker (don't argue) to be just an old softie with its heartwarming chronicle of the friendship between a young (and fatherless, natch) boy (Henry Thomas) and a lovable visitor from outer space. Oft-parodied but undeniably moving, "E.T." made grown-ups feel like kids and kids glad that they were kids ... and turned owners of Speak & Spells into the coolest cats on the block.

    Armageddon

    Release date: July 1, 1998

"Armageddon" is big and loud and stupid and you know you cried when Bruce Willis died so that the rest of us may live. Michael Bay's third feature has a giant asteroid headed straight for Earth, the impact of which will wipe out all existence; our only hope rests with a group of rough and tumble oil drillers who are shot into space to blow the damn thing to kingdom come. Shamelessly earnest in its absurdity and apologetically patriotic, "Armageddon" will make you want to sign up for NASA the way "Top Gun" may have had you mulling over a career in

    Grease

    Release date: June 16, 1978

If you don't have every word of every song in "Grease" memorized, you probably know someone who does. Probably several someones. Arguably the most popular movie musical of all time, "Grease" took us back to the summer of 1959, where Danny Zuco (John Travolta), a too-cool-for-school "greaser," falls in love with Sandy Olsen (Olivia Newton-John), a one-of-a-kind beauty just off the plane from Australia. Their courtship grows complicated when they begin their high school senior year that fall, which often prompts several song and dance numbers. Even 35

    Superman

    Release date: December 10, 1978

Henry Cavill may be set to bring us a Superman for the 21st century in "Man of Steel" this summer, but the Last Son of Krypton who will probably forever be closest to our hearts is the late, great Christopher Reeve. Reeve made his debut as Clark Kent/Kal-El in Richard Donner's "Superman," a film that avoided being a goofy trifle about a guy in spandex and a cape thanks to the director's dedication to "verisimilitude."  Make them believe it; we did, and still do. Yes, it was actually released in the holiday season, not the summer, but the flood

    Star Wars

    Release Date: May 25, 1977

That's right -- real fans don't say "Episode IV" or "A New Hope" or any combination thereof. "Star Wars" is "Star Wars" and will always be "the first 'Star Wars,'" the sci-fi/action/western/whatever that forever changed the global pop culture consciousness with its tale of a farm boy joining a crazy old hermit, a roguish smuggler and a couple of droids on a mission to save a princess from a heavy-breathing black-helmeted creep. The Force will be with us, always.

    Jaws

    Release date: June 20, 1975

Steven Spielberg's big fish tale pretty much invented the summer blockbuster -- and single-handedly diminished beach crowds for most of the summer of 1975 (and beyond). Sure, the mechanical shark did more sinking than swimming, but Spielberg's subsequent less-is-more Hitchcockian approach turned "Jaws" into one of the most terrifying and suspenseful horror films of all time.

    Finding Nemo

    Release Date: May 30, 2003

Spielberg's crew named their mechanical shark "Bruce" after the director's lawyer, which is the name given to Pixar's mighty great white who's

  • By the Beard of Zeus! Ron Burgundy vs. Shark in New ‘Anchorman’ Set Pic

Pacific Coast NewsThe new adventures of San Diego newscaster Ron Burgundy in "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" certainly won't be land-locked. If this new set photo is any indication, Burgundy's journey will take him to the depths of the ocean ... and up against one of the most feared creatures on the planet.

The sky's (or, rather, the sea's) apparently the limit with the new "Anchorman" as Will Ferrell and company are going into even more outrageous territory for one of this year's most anticipated sequels. Ferrell was photographed in full Ron Burgundy garb wrestling with a mechanical (OR IS IT?) shark on the Atlanta set of the film; this new opponent seems only appropriate upon recalling that Burgundy faced off with a bear in the original "Anchorman."

  • ‘Ender’s Game’: War Is Child’s Play in New Teaser Trailer

SummitThe first teaser trailer for "Ender's Game" has been released, offering a grim but rousing vision of a future world in which barely-teenage space warriors are humanity's last hope against hostile E.T.'s.

Based on the bestselling 1985 novel by Orson Scott Card (which you should really read if you haven't already), "Ender's Game" chronicles the radical new war tactics of Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford), the military man assigned to protect the Earth from alien invaders. 70 years ago, our planet and civilization were all but wiped out by the highly advanced race; Graff's plan in anticipation of a second wave is to quite simply send in the kids.

Specifically, Graff recruits the gifted Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) to lead the charge against the scum of the universe, with the reasoning being, as Ford explains in voiceover, that we need "a new kind of soldier, one who doesn't think the way we think, fear the things we fear ... one the enemy would never expect." We agree that it's pretty
