Kevin Frazier with Oprah Winfrey (omg! Insider)
Alfre Woodard hosted her annual pre-Oscars dinner at a private residence in Beverly Hills Wednesday night and only “omg! Insider’s” Kevin Frazier got a peek into the “Girls Only Allowed” night.
Rémy Martin sponsored the dinner party honoring Diahann Carroll for her achievement in the entertainment industry. Guests including Oprah Winfrey, Zoe Saldana, Viola Davis, Regina King, Aisha Tyler, Adepero Oduye and Chandra Wilson came to celebrate Diahann as well as toast the evenings other honorees -- Halle Berry, Kerry Washington, Lorraine Toussaint and Emayatzy Corinealdi -- for their contribution to film this year.
“I wanted to bring together all of the women who have ever been nominated for the Oscar in the acting category — African American women — I just thought it was important for us to come together during Oscar week,” host Woodard told Frazier of her annual party. “First of all, to celebrate each other and also make our presence known. And how small that group is … It’s for those who have been nominated and those who should have been.”
“It’s just fun,” Berry told Frazier. “These are all girlfriends. We inspire each other; that’s what it’s about. It’s about saying, ‘Keep working hard, I see you, I support you, I know your struggle because it’s mine too.’”
“Every little nook of gatherings you are able to be a part of, people share a lot of their experiences, knowledge and warmth,” Saldana said. “I tend to be more of a listener at these events.”
“It’s like, ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,’ but what happens with these women stays with these women,” last year's Best Actress Oscar nominee Viola Davis said with a laugh. “It’s a chance to meet each other, not in the spirit of competition, but in the spirit of camaraderie and companionship.”
“When I walk in this room I see community and sisterhood,” said “Django Unchained” star Kerry Washington. “It’s inspiring to be in a room with these gals.” Washington had the night's signature drink, The Rémy French Kerry Berry, named after her.
Of course, since this was a pre-Oscars bash, Hollywood’s biggest awards show was on the ladies’ minds.
“I think Seth [MacFarlane] is brilliant,” Berry said about this year’s host. “I’m a fan of his.”
“I’m going to be watching from home rooting for Jessica Chastain,” Davis added.
Someone else who will be watching from home? Oprah!
“I’m going to be home watching in my pajamas and froggy slippers,” she said with a smile.
As for the ladies who will be hitting the red carpet, the women know pressure is on to find the right dress.
“I am in the thick of it right now,” Berry said. “It’s fun. I love dressing up!”
Berry — who is presenting — added that she is looking for something “different” to wear this year on Oscar Sunday.
Saldana will also be at the show and shared that she also finds awards season to be fun.
“It’s the time of the year where the little girl in me gets to play,” said the “Star Trek” actress.
