“Argo,” “Life of Pi,” “The Hobbit,” “Lincoln,” and “Skyfall” headline this year's Golden Reel nominations, scoring multiple nods each.
The Golden Reels—selected by the MPSE (the Motion Picture Sound Editors guild)—reward excellence in sound editing in 22 categories, including live-action features, animated films, documentaries, foreign language, and student work.
Sound being one of the most important (and overlooked) aspects of cinema, it's always a good idea to pay attention to what the experts say about their own field. That they choose to recognize “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” and especially “Silver Linings Playbook” is interesting, as none of these, however essential sound is in all three are the kind of movies that get nominated for sound Oscars.
The kind of movies that do get nominated for sound Oscars are movies that get multiple nominations, like “Django Unchained” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
